BOX SCORE

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell 2-0 Wednesday afternoon to Southern Connecticut State University at Kayo Field. The Chargers fell to 0-4-2 overall and 0-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the loss, while the Owls improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

With possession early in Wednesday's game, the Chargers were first to record a shot. Dave Ljungquist (Oxford, Conn./Seymour) received a perfect through pass from Javier Nunez (Cali, Colombia/Berchmans / Norwalk C.C.) down the right side of the field and found himself one-on-one with the Owls' goalkeeper. The shot was saved by Andrew Esposito, but New Haven maintained momentum for the ensuing minutes. Joseph D'Antonio fired a shot in the 10th minute, while the Owls first attempt came in the 13th minute. The two teams exchanged possession in the midfield for a majority of the next 20 minutes. Then, in the 39th minute, Southern Connecticut gained momentum and recorded back-to-back shots in the 39th and 40th minutes. One attempt was blocked, while the other was saved by goalkeeper #J.J. Comeau#. The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute when Luke Perry's one-touch pass found Francisco Lara in open space behind the UNH defense. The period came to an end and SCSU held on to a 1-0 lead.

The Owls took control early in the second half, after another shot by Ljungquist in the opening minute. In the 53rd minute, Lara scored his second of the game when he beat Comeau on a one-on-one shot inside the 18-yard box. In the final 37 minutes, each team recorded scoring opportunities. Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) attempted a free kick just outside the Owls' 18-yard box which sailed high, while Gui Dos Santos (Curitiba, Brazil/Bethel (Conn.)) fired a number of shots at the SCSU goal in the final minutes. Southern Connecticut State also had two opportunities in the final minute, one which slipped off the top of cross bar and another which was blocked by the UNH defense.

As a team, UNH recorded nine shots, while the Owls attempted 11. The Chargers held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks as well. Purcell, Ljungquist and Dos Santos each tallied two shots for the Chargers. Comeau recorded two saves between the posts.
