BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 78-74 to Franklin Pierce University Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss, the Chargers fell to 2-12 overall and 2-8 in conference play. The Ravens improved to 10-4 overall and 7-3 in the NE-10.
Off to a quick start, New Haven jumped out to an early 9-5 lead just over two minutes into the first half. The lead would change in favor of Franklin Pierce at the 15:47 mark and four more times before the nine-minute mark of the half. Trailing 20-18, UNH's
Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) made a layup which sparked a tremendous run by the Chargers. UNH went on a 13-0 run by spreading the ball all over the court and held a 31-20 lead after a pair of
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) free throws at the 6:06 mark. In the final five minutes of the first half, Franklin Pierce cut the Chargers lead to single digits. UNH held an eight-point, 36-28 lead at the break.
New Haven scored the opening basket of the second half, but then were held scoreless for the next three minutes as the Ravens began cutting into the lead. Franklin Pierce went on a 9-0 run to bring the score to 38-37 with 16:46 left. Continuing with the momentum, Franklin Pierce gained the lead at the 14:50 mark and went on a 12-0 run to take the lead back. The Ravens improved their lead to 11 points, 57-46, off a three-pointer at the 10:59 mark. New Haven then began its comeback.
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) made a pair of free throws to cap the Chargers' rally at the 6:12 mark. The two points gave New Haven a 64-63 lead. On their next possession, Franklin Pierce made a jumper to regain the lead. In the final five minutes, New Haven kept the score within five points, including a jumper by Tran with one-second left with brought the score within two points. The Ravens connected on free throws in the closing minutes and sealed the four-point victory.
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) led the Chargers with 15 points, while
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) added 14. Three other Chargers,
Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen),
Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) and
Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) posted double-digit points with 11, 10 and 10, respectively. Freshman
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) led the team with 14 rebounds.
