Second Half Comeback Falls Short, Chargers Lose 65-59 at SNHU

BOX SCORE MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team lost a Northeast-10 Conference game 65-59 Saturday afternoon to Southern New Hampshire University. The Chargers fall to 11-4 overall and 7-4 in conference play with the loss. The Penmen improved to 9-7 overall and 5-6 in conference play.

Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) led the Chargers with 14 points, while Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) scored 13 and grabbed 11 rebounds for the double-double. Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) added 11 points.

The Chargers scored the game's first two points, but SNHU jumped out to an early seven-point, 9-2, lead to open Saturday's game. A three-pointer from Williams at the 14:56 mark brought New Haven back within two points, 9-7. The Penmen controlled the lead for a majority of the first half and took an eight-point lead after a BJ Cardarelli three-pointer with 10:16 left in the first half. New Haven continued to trail for the remainder of the first half. With 49-seconds left, Sean Harris (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) connected on a jumper, bringing the score to 32-26 at halftime.

Williams hit another three-pointer to open the second half and the Chargers were within three points, 29-32. The Penmen held on to the lead until Harris drove the lane and put in a layup at the 13:01 mark to give the Chargers a 39-38 lead. The lead would then change eight times in the next 11 minutes. New Haven led by as many as four points after an Exum three-pointer at the 6:11 mark. With 2:28 left, SNHU put in a layup and took a 58-57 lead, a lead they would not lose in the closing minutes. Ade Barek (London, England/West Catholic / Saint Petersburg College) brought New Haven within two points with 12-seconds left, but a three-point play and free throws in the final seconds sealed the victory for the Penmen.

Southern New Hampshire controlled points in the paint with 28, compared to New Haven's 16. The Chargers held a slight 34-32 advantage on the boards, but the Penmen held a 10-7 lead in offensive rebounds. Ball control ended up hurting the Chargers with 13 turnovers, compared to seven by the Penmen.
