BOX SCORE EASTON, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team scored 38 of its 55 points in the second half in a come-from-behind 55-49 victory over Stonehill College Tuesday night. The Chargers improved to 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Skyhawks dropped to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) and
Ade Barek (London, England/West Catholic / Saint Petersburg College) led the Chargers with 12 points each, while Barek added a double-double with 11 rebounds. Anderson added seven blocks and four rebounds.
In the opening 10 minutes of the first half, New Haven and Stonehill exchanged the lead and tied the score three times. A three-pointer and free throw with 6:46 left in the first half gave the Skyhawks a seven-point lead, 19-12. In the closing 10 minutes of the half, Stonehill improved its lead to as many as 11 points and a dunk with 10-second left gave the Skyhawks a 28-17 lead at the break.
Sparked by a pair of three-point plays from Barek and
Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook), the Chargers went on a 7-0 run to open the second half and narrowed the Skyhawks lead to four points, 28-24, at the 15:40 mark. A jumper by Raheem May-Thompson gave Stonehill a seven point lead, 33-26, with 14:14 left and then the Chargers began their comeback. Over the next seven minutes, New Haven went on a 12-5 run to even the score at 38-38. The teams again battled for the lead, exchanging the lead three times over the course of a three minute span.
Barek connected on a layup with 4:12 left and gave the Chargers the lead for good. On the next possession, Stonehill turned the ball over and the Chargers had the opportunity to go ahead even further. After a missed basket, Barek garnered the offensive board and put back in a layup to give the Chargers a three-point lead, a lead they would not lose. The Skyhawks cut the Chargers' lead to one in the final two minutes, but New Haven held on making free throws down the stretch and forcing five missed field goals by the Skyhawks.
After shooting 19-percent from the floor in the first half, New Haven rallied by connecting on 48-percent in the second half. The Chargers' defense held Stonehill to 37-percent in the first half and 28-percent from the floor in the second half. Both teams struggled from three-point territory, but the Chargers went just 3-for-15 on the night.
