BOX SCORE EASTON, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team suffered an 87-67 loss at Stonehill College Tuesday night in its first game of 2012. The Chargers fell to 2-10 overall and 2-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the loss, while the Skyhawks improved to 7-5 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Stonehill jumped out to a 5-0 lead early, but the Chargers responded with their own 6-0 run to take the lead with 17:12 left in the first half. The teams exchanged the lead over the next five minutes before
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) gave UNH a three-point lead, 13-10, with a triple at the 13:43 mark. Stonehill answered with an 11-0 run to take an eight-point lead, 21-13, with just over 10 minutes left in the first half. A layup with 3:27 left in the first half gave Stonehill a 14-point lead, while a three-pointer with 29-seconds left gave the Skyhawks a 46-28 lead at halftime.
In the first nine minutes of the second half, UNH kept the score within 12 points.
Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) hit a shot from downtown at the 11:44 mark to bring the score within 12 points, 58-46. The 12-point span was the closest the Chargers would get throughout the second half. A Skyhawks' free throw in the final minute gave Stonehill a 20-point lead, 87-67.
The Chargers struggled keeping the ball, with 19 turnovers in the game. The Skyhawks also blocked seven UNH shots in the game.
Freshman
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) led the team with her first career double-double. She scored 13 points, while grabbing 13 rebounds. Tran scored a team-high 15 points and Cruso tallied 13 points.
