BOX SCORE GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game at league-leading Adelphi University, 61-64, Tuesday night. With the loss, the Chargers fell to 13-7 overall and 9-7 in the NE-10. The Panthers moved to 15-5 overall and 12-4 in conference play.
In the game's opening six minutes, the Chargers jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead. UNH connected on four three-pointers and held the Panthers scoreless through the first 7:13. Adelphi answered right back with its own 12-0 run to even the score at 12-12 with 8:35 left in the first half.
Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) put in another shot from long range to give the lead back to New Haven. The Chargers held on to the lead until the 4:11 mark when Adelphi went on a 6-0 run. The Panthers held on to the lead in the final minutes of the first half and led by eight at halftime, 31-23.
Adelphi improved its lead to double digits in the first 20 seconds of the second half. The Panthers would lead by at least 10 points for the first six minutes of the half.
Sean Harris (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) then capped a 12-2 UNH run to cut the Adelphi lead to five points with 12:04 left. The Panthers responded and took another 10-point lead at the 9:23 mark. New Haven again began to chip away at the lead. The Chargers used a combination of free throws, field goals and three-pointers to take the lead with 1:23 left in regulation.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) hit a three-pointer to give the Chargers a 60-59 lead. The following free throw, put UNH ahead 61-59 after the rare four-point play. The Panthers answered with their own three-pointer to regain the lead. New Haven's offensive sets ended in two turnovers and a missed jumper in the final minute as Adelphi held on for the win.
New Haven took advantage of 15 Adelphi turnover and scored 23 points. The Panthers held a slim 30-29 advantage in rebounds, but lead in bench points, 23-14.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) led the team with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting.
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and
Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) each added 10 points, while Williams led the team with eight rebounds.
