Chargers Lose Heartbreaker at Adelphi, 83-86

BOX SCORE GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking three-point game to Adelphi University, 83-86, Tuesday night. With the loss, the Chargers fell to 2-18 overall and 2-14 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Panthers improved to 7-13 overall and 5-11 in NE-10 play.

Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) and Audrey Cunningham (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) led the Chargers with 18 points each. Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) added 10 points, while Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) finished with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Adelphi took the opening tip and took a quick three-point lead. The Panthers continued to lead and jumped out to a early lead. A non-traditional three-point play just under six minutes into the first half gave Adelphi a 12-point lead, 21-9. Three minutes later, Adelphi held on to a 13-point lead near the midway point of the first half. After almost three scoreless minutes, Nikita Reddy (Germantown, Md./Germantown) sparked a Charger rally with a pair of free throws at the 5:34 mark. In the next five minutes, Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) led the Chargers on a scoring rally which brought the score within two points, 39-37. In the final minute Adelphi made one free throw and held on for a three-point halftime lead.

After missing on her first shot of the second half, Reddy helped tie the score at 40-40 with a three-point field goal right after the break. The teams then exchanged the lead before a 6-0 run by the Chargers put them ahead by five points, 49-44. Over the next four minutes, New Haven continued to lead by at least three points until the 12:02 mark when its lead was cut to two points. With 9:53 left in the second half Moore scored a free throw to improve the Chargers lead to their largest of the half, 62-55. Adelphi used the next two minutes to go on a 9-0 run and regain the lead. Cunningham took back the lead for New Haven and the Chargers would continue to lead under the final two minutes. Tran connected on a pair of free throws with 1:20 left to give UNH an 81-79 lead. Adelphi responded by scoring seven of the final nine points of the game. The Chargers missed a pair of baskets in the final minute which could have helped keep the victory alive.

New Haven out-rebounded the Panthers 40-38 in the game. New Haven scored 42 bench points, compared to 28 by Adelphi.
