BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game 91-78 to Merrimack College Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Chargers dropped to 2-11 overall and 2-7 in conference play, while the Warriors improced to 3-9 on the season and 2-7 in conference play.
New Haven scored the game's first two points and then the Chargers and Warriors battled through the first five minutes before either team gained a lead larger than two points. Merrimack's Chloe Rothman connected from three-point territory with 14:35 left in the first half to give the Warriors a 14-11 lead. The Chargers kept Merrimack within five points for a majority of the remaining 14 minutes, but could not gain an advantage.
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) connected on a jumper at the 3:21 mark to even the score at 40-40. The Warriors then scored five of the final eight points in the first half and held a two-point lead at halftime, 45-43.
Merrimack scored the first four points of the second half to take a 49-43 lead. New Haven and Merrimack then exchanged points over the first six minutes as the Warriors held on to a six points lead. With a 57-51 lead, the Warriors went on a four-point run to improve their lead to double digits for the first time in the game. On three different occasions the Chargers cut Merrimack's lead back to single digits, but the Warriors would prevail behind a career-high 36-points from Gennifer Roy.
The Chargers struggled shooting in the game, connecting on just 37-percent of their shots from the field and only 19.2-percent from downtown. Merrimack shot well, connecting on 55.2-percent from the floor and 46.2-percent from long range. In a very fast paced offensive game, both teams turned the ball over a number of times. UNH turned the ball of 19 time and the Warriors 23 times. The Chargers trailed 34-43 on the glass as well.
Freshman
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) led the team with 17 points, while adding a game-high nine rebounds. Tran scored 14 points, while
Nikita Reddy (Germantown, Md./Germantown) and
Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) each added 10 points.
