BOX SCORE BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – A 31st-minute goal by
Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) proved to be the game-winner as the University of New Haven women’s soccer team shutout Pace, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon in Briarcliff, N.Y. The win was the third-straight victory for the Chargers.
New Haven now stands at 10-4-1 on the season and 7-4-1 in the Northeast-10. The Chargers, who stand in fourth place in the conference with three matches to play, have now exceeded their overall win total and Northeast-10 point total from last fall. The Setters drop to 5-7-3 overall with a 5-6-1 NE-10 mark.
Yanez notched the match’s only goal in the 31st minute – her team-leading 10th marker of the season and the 15th of her Charger career.
Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) made four saves to record her third and the team’s fifth clean sheet of the fall.
Defensively, New Haven limited the Setters to just one shot overall and no attempts on net during the first 45 minutes of action. Purchla made all four of her saves after the intermission to preserve the 1-0 victory.
Courtany Hagen stopped five shots for Pace.
The Chargers remain on the road this weekend for a Northeast-10 contest at Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday, Oct. 20. New Haven wraps up the regular season with matches on Kayo Field against defending national champion Saint Rose (Oct. 24, 4 p.m.) and Southern New Hampshire (Oct. 27, 7 p.m.).
