WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of the New Haven men’s soccer team erased a two-goal deficit en route to a 3-3 draw with visiting Saint Anselm on Friday afternoon at Kayo Field. The draw caps the Chargers’ 2012 season with a 6-9-2 record.
On a day where nine Chargers were suiting up for the final time, members of that nine scored all three New Haven goals.
Daniel Dragicevich (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport ) scored his first career marker,
Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) found the net in addition to two assists, and
Firmiano Ribeiro (Barreiras, Brazil/B.M.C. Durfee / Franklin Pierce University) buried the game-tying goal.
Oskar Sewerin (Stockholm, Sweden/Östra Reals Gymnasium) tallied a pair of assists for the Chargers.
The Hawks got on the board in 85 seconds into the match on a Maximillian Glebocki penalty kick, which was awarded following a New Haven handball. Glebocki would score again in the ninth minute to give Saint Anselm a fast 2-0 advantage.
The Chargers rally started in the 11th minute. Purcell launched a penalty kick, which was first headed by Sewerin then finished off by a Dragicevich header. The senior’s first collegiate goal came in the first start of his career.
The margin was extended back to two goals just before haltime, as a Bruno Dasilva marker at 42:50 ran the score to 3-1 entering the intermission.
A quick strike in the 59th minute pulled the Chargers back within one goal at 3-2. Sewerin sent a long ball from the backfield over the top of the Hawks’ defense. Purcell headed it once then finished with his left for his fifth goal of the fall.
The equalizer came off of a corner kick in the 73rd minute. Again it was Purcell starting things off, this time finding the head of Ribeiro for the game-tying goal.
Despite several chances to take the lead – most notably a shot by
Andres Torres (MedellÃn, Colombia/Norwalk (Conn.) / Adelphi University) that beat the keeper but was turned away by a Saint Anselm defender – the full 110 minutes expired with the Chargers and Hawks sharing a 3-3 draw.
Anastasios Petridis (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon ) stood between the pipes for the first 50:15 and made one save.
James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) finished up in goal and stopped both shots that he faced to preserve the deadlock.
Eric Moriarty started in goal for the Hawks and left due to injured at 10:59, allowing one goal on the only shot he faced. Mark Kotsopoulos ceded two goals and made four saves over the final 99:01.
The regular-season ending draw officially eliminated Saint Anselm from postseason contention.
