BOX SCORE ALBANY, N.Y. – Four players netted double-figures and all seven to take the court each had at least six points to guide the University of New Haven women’s basketball team to a 73-63 win at Saint Rose in the Chargers’ Northeast-10 opener.
Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) and
Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) each scored 14 points to lead the balanced attack.
With its second-consecutive win, New Haven moves to 2-1 and begins Northeast-10 play at 1-0. The Golden Knights after also 2-1 following their first loss of the 2012-13 campaign.
In addition to 14 points apiece from Bradford and LeBlanc, co-captain
Nikita Reddy (Germantown, Md./Germantown) poured in 13 tallies as she and LeBlanc comprised New Haven’s 27 points off the bench.
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) also reached double-figures with 10 points,
Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) had seven and
Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) rounded out the scoring with six points.
Despite not scoring until just 4:22 remained in the game, co-captain
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) finished near a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds. Tran matched LeBlanc for the team-high on the glass and shared the team-best of five assists with Bradford. As a unit New Haven shot 24-for-61 (39.3 percent) from the field, 6-for-22 (27.3 percent) from the three-point line and 19-for-22 (86.4 percent) from the free throw line.
New Haven committed just 12 turnovers in the game while forcing 22 Saint Rose miscues that led to 17 points.
The Golden Knights’ Nicole Bini led all players with 23 points. Saint Rose shot 23-for-57 (40.4 percent) from the floor, 9-for-25 (36 percent) from downtown and 8-for-16 (50 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Chargers led by as many as 11 points and the Golden Knights held a lead as large as seven in a back-and-forth first half. Eight points each from LeBlanc, Moore and Reddy fueled the effort that sent New Haven into the intermission holding a 34-32 advantage.
Saint Rose came out of the locker room on the offensive, outscoring the Chargers, 16-9, over the first 8:41 to rebuild its largest cushion of the game at 48-41. At that point, two layups by Stone sparked an 11-0 New Haven run over the ensuing 64 seconds to swing the advantage back to the Blue and Gold, 52-48. The Golden Knights scored the next five points to take the lead, the first of four lead changes over the next 1:09. LeBlanc’s lay-in with 5:20 left ended the swing and started the Chargers on a 7-0 stretch – capped by a Tran three-pointer – to spot New Haven a 61-55 lead with 4:22 to play. Saint Rose briefly cut the lead back to one possession at 63-60, but the Chargers finished the contest on a 10-3 run – led by an 8-for-8 display at the free-throw line – to cap a 73-63 road win.
Ten of Bradford’s 14 points and all nine of Tran’s tallies came in the second half to lead New Haven to victory.
The Chargers take a break from Northeast-10 action and open the home slate on Sunday, Nov. 18 against Dowling at 2 p.m.
