BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) scored eight of her team-high 15 points in the second half, but the University of New Haven women’s basketball team could not overcome Dowling, the defending ECC Champion, in a 66-58 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium.
The loss evens out the Chargers’ record at 2-2, while the Golden Lions improve to .500 at 1-1.
Moore’s 15 points, which earned the sophomore a share of the game best, came on 6-of-13 shooting with a pair of three-pointers.
Nikita Reddy (Germantown, Md./Germantown) knocked down three from beyond the arc en route to 13 points, and
Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) was the third Charger to net double-figures with 10 points.
Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) added seven points,
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) had six,
Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) poured in five and
Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) capped the scoring with two points. All seven Chargers to take the court have scored in each of New Haven’s four outings this season.
Hebert led the way on the glass with seven boards, but the Chargers were collectively outrebounded, 43-31, but the Golden Lions. Moore added six rebounds and Tran had five rips. She was also New Haven’s top facilitator with five assists. The Chargers won the turnover battle, 20-13.
Former Division I All-America honoree Danielle Wilson led Dowling with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Julia Koppl also notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
The Chargers were out to an early lead in the contest, building an 11-6 advantage sparked by three-pointers from Moore, Bradford and Reddy. But the Golden Lions would net the next eight to claim a 14-11 cushion. In total, the lead changed on seven occasions in the opening period and neither club built a lead larger than five points. The final run came from Dowling, which notched six of the final eight points to snap a 26-26 deadlock and head to the locker room owning a 32-28 lead.
Reddy had a team-best 10 points in the opening half – a scoring output matched by Wilson and Connie Simmons from the visitors.
New Haven took its only lead after the intermission on a Bradford trey – earning a 40-39 lead with 15:52 to go. Dowling responded with the longest run from either side, netting the next nine tallies to grab a 48-40 lead. The margin would not shrink within a possession for the remainder of the contest, as New Haven cut it to four on three occasions but was answered each time by the Golden Lions. When the final buzzer sounded, the visitors exited Charger Gymnasium with a 66-58 decision.
In addition to Moore’s eight points after the break, Bradford had seven second-half tallies.
The Chargers resume their Northeast-10 schedule and begin a three-game road swing this Tuesday, Nov. 20 with a trip to Adelphi. The road spell also includes visits to Assumption and Le Moyne. Action returns to Charger Gymnasium for a Tuesday, Dec. 4 meeting with American International and a Saturday, Dec. 8 encounter with crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State to close out the calendar year.
