BOX SCORE GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game at Adelphi, 54-62, Tuesday night at the Center for Recreation and Sports. The Chargers cut the Panthers lead to one point with 3:15 left, but couldn't complete the comeback and fell by eight points.
New Haven dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the loss. Adelphi improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the win.
In the first seven minutes Tuesday, New Haven and Adelphi played point-for-point and exchanged the lead eight times. The Panthers connected from three-point territory with 13:14 left in the first half and turned a New Haven lead into a two-point advantage. Adelphi continued on a 6-2 run and opened a 17-11 lead. Another three-point field goal gave the Panthers their largest lead of the first half, 26-18, with five minutes until halftime. In the final two minutes of the half,
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) scored four-straight for UNH to narrow Adelphi's lead to two. The Panthers then went on a 4-0 run to close the half and lead by six at halftime, 32-36.
Over the first 5:23 of the second half, New Haven went on an 8-2 run and quickly evened the score at 34-34 after a
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) three-pointer. After a Panthers' layup, Adkins connected on a three-pointer with 13:57 left and gave New Haven its first lead of the second half, 37-36. Momentum swung back in the Panthers' favor as seven-straight points gave Adelphi a 42-37 lead. The Chargers twice cut Adelphi's lead to just one point, but couldn't regain the lead in the final minutes. The Panthers pushed the lead to 11 points, 62-51, after an 8-0 run.
Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) hit a three-pointer as time expired and closed the gap to eight points.
Exum led the UNH offense with 17 points off 5-of-12 shooting. The junior also handed out a team-high three assists and grabbed five rebounds.
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. DePass also scored in double figures with 10 points off 3-of-4 shooting.
As a team, New Haven shot 38.3-percent from the floor, while the Panthers connected at a 53.5-percent clip.
