BOX SCORE GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women’s basketball team finished Tuesday’s game on a 12-0 run – capped by a three-pointer from
Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) with under 10 seconds to play – to stun host Adelphi, 79-77, in a Northeast-10 Conference clash. Bradford finished with a game-high 21 points, and
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) posted a double-double in her season debut.
With the last-second victory, the Chargers stay perfect at 2-0 in the NE-10 and move to 3-2 overall. Adelphi falls to 0-2 on the season with a 1-1 conference mark.
Bradford’s 21 points also marked a personal career-best for the freshman. Hayes’ double-double – the second of her career – consisted of a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds in her first action of 2012-13. The last pair of New Haven teammates to each score 20 points in a game were
Helin Marte (Woodhaven, N.Y./Richmond Hill ) and
Dominique Stellmacher (New Britain, Conn./New Britain ), who netted 26 and 22, respectively, in another two-point NE-10 win – a 67-65 victory at Southern New Hampshire on Jan. 26, 2010.
Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) added 17 points for the Chargers, who collectively shot a season-high 40.5 percent (32-for-79) from the field.
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) netted seven,
Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) had six,
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) notched five and
Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) rounded out the scoring with three points.
Moore matched Hayes with 11 rebounds as the Chargers held a 51-41 advantage on the glass – including 17 offensive boards that led to 11 second-chance points. New Haven also won the turnover battle, 24-18, en route to 24 points off of Adelphi miscues.
Tran was New Haven’s top facilitator with four assists. Hayes complemented her double-double with three blocks and two steals.
Leading the way for the Panthers was reigning Northeast-10 Player of the Week Sade Jackson, who recorded her second-straight triple-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists.
After a four-game absence, Hayes got right into the mix with the game’s first bucket. Three more layups from Hayes came minutes later as a part of 19-7 stretch that saw the Chargers open up the first double-digit advantage of the evening at 21-11. Adelphi ran off the next 10 points to knot the score, and the game of runs continued as the Chargers recorded the next nine to reestablish an advantage at 32-23. This time, the cushion held up as New Haven led by as many as 16 points and headed into the intermission with a 48-35 lead.
The home team came out of the locker room as the aggressor, beginning the second period on a 12-2 run to trim the deficit back to a single-possession at 50-47 with 15;29 to go. Though the lead would grow back to seven points on three occasions – courtesy of buckets by Bradford, Hayes and Tran – the Panthers heated up from long-range to take their first lead of the second half at 62-61. The downtown barrage continued as Adelphi knocked down four more three-pointers during the ensuing stretch to build a 77-67 cushion with just 2:29 to go.
However, the Chargers would not allow another point the rest of the way. A layup by LeBlanc and a Bradford triple cut the deficit in half at 77-72 with 1:27 to play, and Hayes’ final bucket of the night trimmed it back to a possession at 77-74 with 42 seconds on the clock. After a missed free throw by Jackson, LeBlanc buried a jumper with 19 ticks remaining to make it a 77-76 game and then the Chargers forced a turnover via the full-court press on the ensuing Adelphi possession. With a chance to win the game, Bradford drained a three-pointer from the deep corner with just five seconds left to give New Haven a 79-77 victory.
The last New Haven win when tied or trailing in the final 10 seconds came at American International on Dec. 6, 2011 on last-second bucket by Tran.
After a week away from action surrounding the Thanksgiving holiday, the Chargers’ road swing through the NE-10 continues next Wednesday, Nov. 28 with a visit to Assumption. A trip to Le Moyne on Dec. 1 concludes the stretch that will see New Haven playing six of its first seven outings of 2012-13 away from Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers finally return to home to host American International on Dec. 4.
