WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Led by a pair of 20-plus point performances, the University of New Haven men’s basketball team upended non-conference opponent Concordia, 77-60, for its third consecutive victory.
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) posted his fifth double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
With the win, the Chargers improve to 4-5 overall. Concordia drops to 4-10.
Anderson shot 9-for-13 from the floor with three free throws to amass his game-high 21 points.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) knocked down four three-pointers as a part of a 6-for-13 shooting day to net 20 points.
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) added 13 points and
Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) had 12 to go along with five assists, marking the second consecutive game in which four Chargers scored in double figures.
Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) added nine points in addition to seven rebounds, and
Joshua Guddemi (Nottingham, England/Derby) scored two to round out the New Haven offense. The Chargers’ 77 points are the most for the squad since a 90-62 win over Molloy on Dec. 31, 2011.
Led by Anderson’s game-high 12 boards, New Haven owned a 40-33 advantage on the glass and won the turnover battle, 15-12.
Norman Pope scored 20 points for the Clippers, and Argelix Gil recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The opening stretch of action featured eight lead changes, with Concordia grabbing a 25-24 advantage with 6:21 left in the first half. At that point, the Chargers put together the game’s first run as an alley-oop pass from Williams to James highlighted a 6-0 stretch that gave New Haven a 30-25 cushion with five minutes remaining in the frame. However, the Clippers responded with their first run of the evening, netting a 9-2 spurt over the ensuing 2:39 to claim a 34-32 cushion. Two free throws from Williams capped the first half scoring to send the Chargers into the intermission tied with Concordia, 34-34.
In total, the first half featured eight ties and 11 lead changes. Concordia never led by more than two points, and the largest Charger advantage was six.
After the Clippers scored the first bucket of the second half, Exum knocked down consecutive three-pointers and Adkins took a steal coast-to-coast to build a 42-36 New Haven lead. Anderson followed with a free throw to give the Chargers their largest lead of the evening, and another Adkins bucket extended the run to 11-0. A Concordia layup ended the drought for the visiting team, but Exum answered with his third trey of the half to give New Haven a double-digit lead at 48-38. The Clippers never got closer than eight points and the lead grew as large as 19 points as the Chargers pulled away for a 77-60 victory.
Following the 34-34 dead heat in the first half, New Haven outscored Concordia, 43-26, in the second period to seal the victory.
The Chargers will take a 10-day break from competition before concluding the 2012 calendar year on Dec. 29 at Molloy. Northeast-10 play resumes on Jan. 5, 2013 at Charger Gymnasium against Pace.
