BOX SCORE WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team fell 76-75 Wednesday night in overtime at Assumption College. The Chargers fell to 13-9 overall and 9-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the loss. Assumption improved to 10-12 overall and 8-10 in conference play with the win.
The Chargers had the ball with six seconds left, but an offensive foul with just over one-second left as the ball was advanced down the court gave the ball back Assumption. Time expired and New Haven dropped its second heartbreaking loss in a row.
In the first ten minutes of the opening half, New Haven and Assumption exchanged the lead.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) put in a layup at the 10:43 mark to give UNH an 11-10 lead. Assumption answered with another field goal to regain the lead, a lead which it held on to for the remainder of the first half. After a 5-0 run, the Greyhounds took a 28-20 lead with just under two minutes left in the first half. Exum connected from long range in the final minute to cut the Greyhounds' lead to five points, but a layup as the buzzer sounded improved Assumption's lead to 32-25 at halftime.
The Greyhounds scored the first four points of the second half and took an early 11-point lead. At the 15:05 mark, Assumption scored a layup to take a 47-37 lead. The Chargers then went on a 6-0 run over the next three minutes to trim the Assumption lead down to four points, 47-43. New Haven would continue to chip away at Assumption's lead throughout the next eight minutes. Exum put in a layup on the tail end of a 7-0 run for the Chargers, giving them a 57-56 lead with just under four minutes left in regulation. In the final minutes, New Haven and Assumption both took leads, while the score was tied three different times.
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to tie the score, while Assumption's despiration attempt at the buzzer didn't fall.
Krystian Foriest (Bronx, NY/Wings Academy ) connected from three-point territory to open overtime and give the Chargers an early lead in the extra period. The teams exchanged the lead throughout the five minutes of overtime. Foriest put the Chargers up by one point, 75-74, with 21 seconds left. Assumption then connected on a pair of free throws with six seconds left in overtime. As the Chargers advanced the ball down the court, an offensive foul was called with just one second remaining, turning the ball back over to the Greyhounds.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) led the Chargers with 24 points, while he added eight rebounds.
Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) added 17 points and
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) added 10 points in the loss.
