Magnone Scores Four, Leads Charger Past Mercy, 19-4

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team, nationally ranked No. 9, rolled to a 19-4 victory over Mercy College Saturday afternoon in its 2012 home opener. With the win, the Chargers improved to 2-0, while the Mavericks fell to 0-2.

Mercy opened scoring in Saturday's game with an unassisted goal in the first 15 seconds. The Chargers then rallied for three-straight goals to take a 3-1 lead with 25:47 left in the first half. Just 30 seconds later, Mercy brought the score back within one goal for the second time in the first half. Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) then sparked a 7-0 run for the Chargers in the final 22 minutes of the first half. McKee and Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) both scored two goals in the stretch, while Ashley Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) handed out a pair of assists. With just over two minutes left in the half, McKee scored her second to give the Chargers a 10-2 lead, a lead which they carried to halftime.

Ferrandiz and Magnone scored two in the opening five minutes of the second half to push New Haven's lead to 10 points, 12-2. Ashley Handel from Mercy scored an unassisted goal with 22:38 left in the second half to cut the Chargers' lead back to nine. In the final 20 minutes, New Haven scored seven of the final eight goals to cruise to the 15-point victory. Kassi Grant and (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot)Ashley Travis# scored a pair of goals in the final four minutes to give the Chargers a 19-4 victory.

The Chargers led 29-16 in shots and 24-13 in ground balls. Mercy controls the draw with a 16-8 advantage in the circle. UNH was successful on 15-of-16 clear attempts, while Mercy just 8-of-14 attempts.

Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) led the Chargers with four goals, while adding one assist for five points. Ashley Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) scored three and handed out three assists as well. Freshman Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) added four points off two goals and two assists. In the net, Maureen Spellman (Trumbull, Conn./Saint Joseph) earned her second victory of the season and tallied eight saves, including three free-position saves.
