BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The nationally ranked No. 9 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated Assumption College 21-6 Wednesday afternoon in its 2012 Northeast-10 Conference opener. The Chargers improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Greyhounds fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the NE-10 with the loss.
Freshman
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) put the Chargers ahed with the first goal of the opening half. She scored off a free position shot and started a 13-0 rally for the Chargers in the first half. After 10 minutes, New Haven led 4-0 and after 20 minutes the Chargers led 8-0. With just under 10 minutes left in the first half,
Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) scored her fourth goal of the half to put the Chargers ahead 9-0. Two more scores by Campbell along with one from both
Ashley Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Magnone put the Chargers ahead 13-0 with 1:30 left in the half. With 1:17 left in the first half, Amy McNeil of Assumption broke the shutout and brought the score to 13-1 at halftime.
Alexis Gabbe (Malverne, N.Y./Malverne) wasted no time in the second half to start scoring. The senior scored her second of the game to put UNH ahead by 13. The Greyhounds scored three of the next four goals and cut New Haven's lead to 11, 15-4, but the Chargers answered with three unanswered. Ferrandiz scored a pair during the stretch and brought New Haven back ahead by 14 points. Steph O'Rourke scored two back-to-back goal for Assumption as the lead was trimmed to 18-6 at the 10:43 mark. In the final 10 minutes, New Haven scored three more unanswered to take a 21-6 decision.
The Chargers led 36-17 in shots and 25-10 in ground balls. New Haven handled the draw as well, winning 15-of-26 draws. The Chargers were successful on 10-of-12 clears, while holding Assumption to 5-of-12 attempts.
Between the posts,
Maureen Spellman (Trumbull, Conn./Saint Joseph) led the Chargers with eight saves, including five impressive saves in the first half. Ferrandiz led the Chargers with seven total points off five goals and two assists. Campbell and Magnone each added five goals and one assist. Gabbe chipped in with two goals and one assist.
