No. 9 Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past SCSU, 19-6

BOX SCORE NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The nationally ranked No. 9 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated Southern Connecticut State University 19-6 Monday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. The Chargers improved to 6-0 on the year and 4-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. The Owls fell to 1-6 overall and 0-5 in conference play. 

Senior Alexis Gabbe (Malverne, N.Y./Malverne) led the Chargers with four goals and one assist, while Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor), Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) each chipped in three scores.

New Haven opened the first 11 minutes with an 8-0 run, including three goals by Gabbe and two goals by Lieberman. Southern Connecticut got on the board at the 18:25 mark with an unassisted goal. The Chargers improved their lead to 10 points off a goal by Curry, assisted by Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield), with 10:23 left in the first half. The teams exchanged a pair of goals over a four minute stretch and the Chargers led 13-3 with 3:23 left. Daina Catanese (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) scored her first collegiate goal with 15-second left in the first half to give the Chargers a 14-3 lead at halftime.

Campbell scored the first goal of the second half to put UNH up 15-3, but SCSU rallied with three-straight goals to bring the score within nine, 15-6. The Chargers answered with the final four goals of the game in the final 11 minutes and sealed a 13-point victory.

The Chargers out-shot the Owls 29-10 and led 24-21 in ground balls. The Chargers also led 16-11 in draw controls. New Haven successfully cleared the ball 12-of-14 times and was successful on 2-of-4 free position attempts.

In goal, Maureen Spellman (Trumbull, Conn./Saint Joseph) earned her sixth win of the season and tallied four saves. Sharon Strain (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) also saw time in goal for the first time this season, in the final six minutes.
