Chargers Earn Big 16-6 Opening Game Victory at Molloy

BOX SCORE ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated Molloy College 16-6 Thursday afternoon in the team's opening game of the 2012 season. The Lions fell to 2-2, while the Chargers won their season opener.

The Lions scored two of the games first three goals to jump out to a 2-1 lead just over two minutes into the first half. Alexis Gabbe (Malverne, N.Y./Malverne) and Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) combined for a pair of UNH goals during a 30-second stretch to put the Chargers ahead. Molloy evened the score at 3-3, but the Chargers responded with six-straight goals, including two from Ashley Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow). The Lions scored another two before Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) scored the final goal of the first half. The Charagers held a 10-5 advantage at the break.

Just under 40-seconds into the second half, Magnone scored her fourth of five goals in the game to give the Chargers an 11-5 lead. The Chargers scored four more unanswered points to take a 15-5 lead with just under 20-minutes left in regulation. The teams exchanged goals in the final 10-minutes and the Chargers pulled off a 10-point victory.

UNH held a 15-9 lead in draw controls, a 20-17 advantage in ground balls and was successful on 19-of-24 clear attempts.

Magnone led the team with five scores, while Gabbe led the team with six points off three goals and three assists. Curry added two goals and one assits, while Ferrandiz and McKee each scored two goals. Goalkeeper Maureen Spellman (Trumbull, Conn./Saint Joseph) recorded seven saves in the win.

New Haven will return to action on Saturday, March 10 when it hosts Mercy College at Kayo Field in its 2012 home opening. Game time at Kayo Field is set for 1 p.m. For complete coverage, stay posted to www.NewHavenChargers.com.
