BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated American International College 14-8 Tuesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. With the win, the Chargers' head coach Chris Celano recorded his 200th career victory and improved the team's record to 15-9-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division play. The Yellow Jackets fell to 10-14-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the NE-10 Southwest Division.
New Haven opened scored in Tuesday's game in the bottom of the first inning.
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) drove in the first run and gave the Chargers an early lead.
David Wirkus (Orange, Conn./Fairfield Prep / St. Anselm College) hammered a triple to right center in the bottom of the second inning and drove in two runs to give UNH a 3-0 lead. The senior then scored off a passed ball and gave UNH a 4-0 lead after two.
American International put six runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning off six hits. With two outs,
Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) entered the game on the mound for the Chargers and forced the third out. Trailing 4-6,
Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) evened the score at 6-6 with a two-RBI single to center field in the bottom of the fourth.
Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) then drove in the go-ahead run with a RBI-single later in the inning.
AIC evened the score once again in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI-single to left field. The Chargers answered in the bottom of the seventh inning, with an offensive burst of six hits and seven runs. Six different batters recorded RBI-hits in the inning, while
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) hit what proved to be the game-winning RBI to center field and drove in Brockett for UNH's ninth run. Brendan O'Reilly tallied a two-RBI single to right field and gave the Chargers a 12-7 lead. Brockett drove in his second run of the game with a single and the Chargers 14th run.
The Yellow Jackets added one run in the top of the eighth inning as the Chargers held on for a six-run victory.
The Chargers complete batting order drove in at least one run and scored at least one run.
Ryan Brocket (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) went 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and one run, while
Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Freshman
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) hammered three hits with one RBI and three runs.
Relief pitched
Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) earned the win, improving to 3-0 on the season. He entered in the fourth inning and threw three 1/3 innings in total. He struckout three and allowed one earned run.
