BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, CONN. - The University of New Haven baseball team swept the College of Saint Rose in a pair of Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Divisional games at Frank Vieira Field on Friday afternoon. The Chargers collected a 6-4 victory in game one and then completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory in game two. UNH improved to 18-14-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the NE-10 Southwest Division, while the Golden Knights fell to 11-24 overall and 3-9 in the division.
Game One
After a scoreless first inning, the Chargers took the early lead in the bottom of the second, started by
Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) who collected a two out triple to left center. He scored from third base on a first and third situation when Saint Rose attempted to gun down
David Wirkus (Orange, Conn./Fairfield Prep / St. Anselm College) on the steal at second. The Chargers pushed another run across the board in the third inning when
Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), who singled to left field in the inning, scored from third base when
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) put the ball in play.
The Golden Knights collected their first run of the game in the top of the fourth off of a single up the middle. New Haven answered back in the bottom of the inning with three more runs, including a two RBI triple by
Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern). Clout scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Carr. The Golden Knights took back two runs in the fifth, scoring two runs on a single through the right side. New Haven again answered back in the bottom of the inning. Brendan Buckley led off the inning with a double down the left field line and scored on a single by
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook). The Golden Knights only managed one more run for the rest of the game, falling to New Haven 6-4.
Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) collected the win in the first game, allowing only one run and striking out one. His record improves to 4-0.
Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) tallied the save in the game after pitching three innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.
Game Two
The Chargers jumped out to an early lead in the second game, pushing two runs across the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Clout led off the inning with a single, stealing second after reaching first. Carr collected a walk in the inning and scored, along with Clout, when the Golden Knights committed defensive errors. After two scoreless innings, New Haven increased their lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Chargers took advantage of two more defensive errors by Saint Rose when Clout drove in two runs on a throwing error. Clout scored when Carr singled to right field.
The Golden Knights answered back in the top of the fifth with three runs on three singles in the inning. The game remained scoreless through the seventh inning until the Golden Knights tied the score at five in the top of the eighth. The Chargers committed an error in the inning, allowing Saint Rose to score two unearned runs. The Chargers took the lead back in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a fielder’s choice by
Jordan Kershaw (Seymour, Conn./Seymour). Kershaw also scored from third on a balk. The Golden Knights were unable to answer back in the top of the ninth.
Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) collected the win in the second game, allowing no hits and no runs with two strikeouts. His record improves to 1-1 with the victory.
Clout led the Chargers at the plate in the second game, going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Carr went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run and one RBI.
