BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The nationally ranked No. 6 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team fell short to No. 1 Adelphi University 8-10 Tuesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Kayo Field. The Chargers dropped to 12-4 overall and 7-4 in conference play, while the Panthers improved to 14-1 overall and 11-1 in the NE-10.
Adelphi took the opening lead with back-to-back goals in the first three minutes. New Haven's
Alexis Gabbe (Malverne, N.Y./Malverne) put the Chargers on the board with 25:52 left in the first half. She assisted on the second and tying goal by UNH just 48-seconds later by
Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie). After a six-minute break, Adelphi scored another two unanswered goals to regain the lead, 4-2.
Ashley Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) then helped lead the Chargers on their own 2-0 run over an eight-minute stretch. She assisted on a
Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) goal with 17:14 on the clock and scored her 40th of the season at the 9:33 mark to tie the game once again at 4-4. Adelphi added its fifth goal of the half with 8:35 left in the half and held on to a 5-4 lead through the first half.
New Haven again tied the score in the first minute of the second half. Freshman
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) scored her 25th of the season off a pass from
Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor). Adelphi then put the game away with a 4-0 run over the next nine minutes of the second half. Erica Devito scored the Panthers nine goal and gave Adelphi a 9-5 lead with 20:15 left in the second half. The Chargers were then sparked by another Gabbe goal with just over 19-minutes left. The senior ignited a 3-0 run for UNH, as the Panthers' lead was closed to one goal, 8-9. Adelphi's final goal of the game came with 3:05 left and it sealed the two-goal victory.
Gabbe led the Chargers with two goals and two assists for four points. Ferrandiz added one goal and two assists for three points. Lieberman also tabbed multiple points with one goal and one assist.
New Haven held an 11-9 lead in draw controls, but the Panthers led 27-17 in shots and 13-12 in ground balls.
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, April 28 for its final regular season game against Saint Anselm. The day is also Senior Day at Kayo Field with game time set for 1 p.m. Stay posted to
