BOX SCORE WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team, nationally ranked No. 7, suffered a season-ending 8-9 loss to No. 9 Bentley University in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament Wednesday night. The Chargers finished the season with a 13-5 record, while the Falcons improved to 13-5 on the season and advanced to the semifinals.
After tying the score at 8-8 with just over two minutes left, the Falcons scored the game-winning goal with 31-seconds left and controlled the draw as time expired.
In the first six minutes of Wednesday's game, the team's exchanged goals. Bentley then scored four-straight to take an early lead. With 6:31 left in the first half,
Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) scored her 55th goal of the game and brought the gap back to three points. Just over one minute later in the half,
Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) scored another unassisted goal to bring the score back within two, 5-3. The teams again exchanged goals in the final five minutes of the half as the Falcons held on to a 6-4 lead at the break.
With the first goal of the second half coming 11 minutes into the half, Bentley took a 7-4 lead out of halftime. New Haven began a rally with 15:58 left in the second half when Magnone scored off an assist by Gabbe. One Bentley goal came before the Chargers scored another three-straight in the final 10-minutes of the second half. Gabbe brought the score within one at the 10:02 mark, while
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) cut the Falcons' lead to just one at the 3:51 mark.
Ashley Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) tied the game at 8-8 with a free position goal with 2:01 left. The Falcons then scored the game-sealing goal with 31-seconds left to advance in the conference tournament.
Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie),
Alexis Gabbe (Malverne, N.Y./Malverne) and
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) each tallied two goals to lead the UNH attack. Gabbe added one assist for a team-high three points.
