WEST HAVEN, Conn. – University of New Haven Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation, Deborah Chin has announced the hiring of Roy Fink as the Chargers’ new head men’s soccer coach. Fink becomes the 13th head coach in men’s soccer history at New Haven and brings over eight years of coaching experience. He will begin his duties Friday, June 1.
“I am honored to be named the head men’s soccer coach at the University of New Haven,” said Fink. “I’d like to thank Debbie Chin and the entire search committee for giving me the opportunity to become a college head coach. Over the course of my coaching career, I’ve always strived to be the best in hopes of one day becoming a head coach.”
“The University is very excited to welcome Roy as the new head men’s soccer coach,” said Chin. “We believe Roy’s collegiate coaching experience combined with his soccer philosophy will allow the team to excel in the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference.”
For the previous four seasons, Fink was an assistant at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. His primary duties for the Minutemen included all aspects of player development, recruiting, coordinating the soccer academy and day-to-day operations. During his tenure, the Minutemen won the 2008 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
The Israeli native began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater in 2004, the University of Tampa. After two seasons with Tampa, Fink spent another two years as the Director of Coaching at Strictly Soccer Futbol Club where he trained and developed young soccer talent. His coaching experience outside of the collegiate ranks includes a stint with the Colorado Rapids U-23 team as an assistant and three years with the Western United Futbol Club (Mass.) as a technical trainer.
As a player, Fink enjoyed an outstanding career at the University of Tampa where he was the 2001 NSCAA Division II National Player of the Year after leading the Spartans to the National Championship. A two-time NSCAA All-American selection, he still ranks third overall in career goal scoring at Tampa. After graduating, he also spent three seasons in the Premier Development League (PDL) for the Cape Cod Crusaders and Boulder Rapids.
Prior to coming to America, Fink served three years in the Israel Armed Forces where he was a Sergeant. He also was a starter for the Israel Under-16/18 National Team and played 150 games in the Israeli Premiership and Division One leagues.
