BOX SCORE GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven baseball team suffered an 11-inning 1-2 loss to Adelphi University Thursday afternoon in Garden City, N.Y. The first batter in the bottom of the 11th inning hit a walk-off homerun over the left center fence to earn the win for the Panthers. The Chargers dropped to 22-17-1 overall and 9-9-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division with the loss, while the Panthers improved to 23-20 overall and 11-8 in divisional play.
The Chargers and Panthers played scoreless through the first four innings. UNH left four runners on base in the first four innings, while Adelphi stranded three runners on base.
Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) drove in the game's first run in the top of the fifth inning.
David Wirkus (Orange, Conn./Fairfield Prep / St. Anselm College) scored after leading off the inning with a single through the right side. Freshman Brendan O'Reilly advanced Wirkus with a sacrifice bunt in the second at-bat of the fifth.
After another scoreless inning, the sixth, Adelphi evened the score in the bottom of the seventh with a RBI-single to center field. Defense and pitching then dominated the eighth, ninth and tenth innings as both teams went scoreless again. The Panthers left one runner on base in each of the innings, while UNH stranded one in the top of the ninth inning. The Panthers retired the side in the top of the 11th inning and the first batter in the bottom half produced the walk-off homerun for AU.
Wirkus led the Chargers with two hits in four at-bats.
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) also went 2-for-5 at the plate, while Brockett drove in the only run. In an error-free game, the Chargers' defense and pitching once again played well.
Derek Drag (Meriden, Conn./O.H. Platt / Central Conn. St.) started the game and went six 2/3 innings. After a brief one-out relief apperance by
Henry Hirsch (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale),
Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) threw the final three innings for UNH. Drag fanned five and allowed just two hits, while Royer threw two strikeouts and allowed five hits.
With two games remaining in the regular season and out of the last NE-10 playoffs by 1.5 games, the Chargers need to win both games against the Panthers on Sunday to earn a spot in the NE-10 tournament next week.
