Late Outburst Propels Chargers to 4-4 Draw at Bentley

BOX SCORE WALTHAM, Mass. – Trailing 4-1 with just over 10 minutes to go at Bentley, the University of New Haven men’s soccer team ran off the three goals in a span of only 3:40 to stun the Falcons and claim a 4-4 draw on Saturday afternoon in Waltham.

After the draw, the Chargers now stand at 3-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the Northeast-10. Bentley wraps up the weekend with a 4-3-2 record on the season and a 2-2-2 conference tally.

Tim Hines (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) scored his first goal of the season early in the first half, and an Andres Torres (Medellín, Colombia/Norwalk (Conn.) / Adelphi University) goal followed by a pair of #Joseph D’Antonio# markers provided the rally in the 4-4 draw.

Bentley wasted no time starting the scoring as Weston Zeiner centered a ball of Brennan Da Costa In the opening minute. Da Costa fired from just five yards out and found the back of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead just 36 seconds into the contest.

New Haven would respond almost immediately as Hines’ second career goal came in the third minute, assisted on a cross by Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut).

A Michael Kahn goal in the 17th minute broke the 1-1 tie and a 33rd-minute marker from Da Costa sent the Falcons into the intermission with a 3-1 advantage. Bentley would add what appeared to be an insurance goal in the 65th minute as a defensive miscue led to a goal by Scott Levy to put the home team on top, 4-1.

The comeback began in the 80th minute when Torres headed home a corner kick served by Purcell to pull New Haven to within 4-2. The goal was Torres’ third of the season, and Purcell’s pair of helpers give him three assists on the season and five in his two-year Charger career.

New Haven struck again just 66 seconds later, as Dave Ljungquist (Oxford, Conn./Seymour) crossed a ball into the box that D’Antonio sent home to trim the margin to 4-3. The assist was Ljungquist’s first point of the fall and the ninth of his career.

Still in search of the equalizer, the Chargers got their chance in the 84th minute when a foul in the box led to a penalty kick. D’Antonio was awarded the try and buried it to complete the improbable comeback. The senior forward’s pair of goals increased his team-high season output to six tallies and improved his career total to 15 goals and 34 total points.

Goalkeepers Anastasios Petridis (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon ) and Alex Pilitsis each made two stops from that point forward to preserve the 4-4 deadlock after 110 minutes. Petridis made six saves for the Chargers and Pilitsis turned away three shots for Bentley.

The Chargers’ three-match road swing concludes with a non-conference meeting at Dowling on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Action returns to campus on Saturday, Oct. 6 under the lights with a 7 p.m. outing against Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce.
