Yanez Nets Pair in 4-1 Win at Saint Anselm

BOX SCORE MANCHESTER, N.H. – #Monica Yanez# scored two goals, and two other Chargers scored for the first time in their careers as the University of New Haven women’s soccer downed host Saint Anselm, 4-1, in Saturday’s Northeast-10 Conference opener.

With the win, New Haven moves to 4-0-0 and matches the best start in program history (1994, 2005, 2009). The Chargers also snap of two-match skid in Northeast-10 Conference openers; New Haven is now 3-2 in league openers since joining the Northeast-10 in the 2008 season. Saint Anselm falls to 1-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference action.

Yanez increased her team-high scoring output to five goals, while Ashley Dawson (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) and Heather Timmons (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) both scored their first collegiate goals. Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) had two assists, and Dawson, Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) and Nicole Pacapelli (West Haven, Conn./West Haven / Stonehill College) each doled out a helper as well.

Moriah Saidel (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) made 12 saves, topping her career high of 11 stops set in Thursday’s shutout of No. 23 Dowling. A dozen saves is the most by a New Haven keeper since Kim Taylor ’12 corralled 14 Adelphi offerings on Oct. 27, 2010. Saidel has played all 360 minutes in net for the Chargers this season.

The Chargers got on the board early, starting the scoring in the ninth minute. Francisco sailed a corner kick to the far post, where Yanez headed it home to put the Chargers on top, 1-0.

Francisco’s assist was her 46th career point, moving her into the all-time top-10 in New Haven history.

Later in the first half, two New Haven student-athletes found the net for the first time in their respective careers.  Dawson scored off of a feed from Marisa Garcia in the 21st minute, and Garcia and Dawson connected to find Timmons just 16 seconds before halftime to extend the margin to 3-0.

Garcia, who also registered an assist in Thursday’s home win, has now distributed three helpers in her first two collegiate matches.

Saidel made seven saves over the first 45 minutes to preserve the 3-0 score heading into the locker room.

Yanez added an insurance tally in the 85th minute, burying a goal assisted by Pacapelli to increase the lead to 4-0 in the closing minutes. Yanez is the first Charger to score a goal in four consecutive matches since 2009, when Alexa DellaRocco found the back of the net in each of New Haven’s last four regular-season outings. Her five goals thus far in 2012 equal her career scoring output from her first two seasons at New Haven.

Pacapelli now has six points in 2012 and 12 in her two-year Charger career.

The Hawks ended the shutout bid with just 23 seconds remaining on a goal by Lindsay Johnson. The marker ended a streak of 286:20 scoreless minutes played by Saidel and the Charger defense.

New Haven was outshot by the host Hawks, 21-9.

The Chargers are back in action on Wednesday evening at Assumption. The Greyhounds are 0-1 entering their Northeast-10 opener tomorrow afternoon at Franklin Pierce. Action returns to Kayo Field on Saturday, Sept. 15 with a 1 p.m. contest against conference foe Bentley. The match against the Falcons will be streamed live in high definition and available on most mobile devices on NewHavenChargers.com.

Notes

Excluding starting goalkeeper Moriah Saidel, three of the six Chargers to make their collegiate debuts in 2012 have recorded either a goal or an assist.

With a win or a draw on Wednesday evening at Assumption, New Haven would record its best five-match start in program history.
