Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) scored a career-high 26 points, including an all-time best six three-pointers, to lift the University of New Haven men's basketball team to a 75-60 victory over visiting Southern New Hampshire University. The win marks New Haven's ninth-straight victory, while improving its record to 10-5 overall and 7-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference. SNHU dropped to 10-5 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
The team is also in the midst of the program's longest winning streak since the 2002-03 season, when Jay Young led the Chargers to 11-straight victories.
Williams connected on 6-of-8 three-point field goals and 8-of-13 from the floor to pace the Chargers.
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds, recording his ninth double-double of the year. The sophomore has now recorded 10-or-more rebounds in 11-straight games.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) added 16 points with three treys and seven free throws. Point guard
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) was also in double figures with 15 points.
The game went point-for-point through a majority of the first half. In the first 13 minutes, the lead changed nine times until
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) connected from long range with 7:25 left in the half. The basket gave UNH a 24-23 lead and the momentum carried the Chargers on a 9-0 run. Williams and Exum also hit three pointers during the stretch which gave New Haven a seven point lead, 30-23, with 6:15 left in the half. The Penmen quickly responded with their own 8-0 run to regain the lead with 2:42 left. The lead changed for the 10th time of the half after another Exum three-pointer with just over a minute left. Williams improved the UNH lead to four with 25 seconds left, but the Penmen drained a buzzer beater before the half and brought the game within one, 37-36, at the break.
Williams score 12 of his 26 in the first half, while Anderson score 10 and grabbed six boards. The Chargers shot 48.1 percent from the floor and 58.3 percent from three-point range. The Penmen shot 50 percent from the floor and 54.5 percent from three-point territory.
The second half began with UNH holding on to a narrow lead, but the Penmen battled back. With 14:22 on the clock, SNHU took a 44-43 lead, a lead which it held for the next three minutes. After trailing by three, the Chargers went on another 9-0 run to regain the lead for good. The advantage was extended as the rally continued to the 4:08 mark. In total, UNH enjoyed a 21-6 run during the eight-minute stretch. James put a jumper which ended the streak and gave UNH a 12-point lead, 67-55. The Chargers then cruised to the win, connecting on 5-of-6 free throws in the final minutes.
The Chargers, improved to shot 55.6 percent in the second half, including 66.7 percent from beyond the arc. New Haven also shot 82.4 percent from the charity stripe in the second stanza. The UNH defense held strong, holding the Penmen to 0-of-7 from long range and 11-of-27 from the field in the half.
In total, the game saw 12 lead changes and three tied scores. The Chargers shot 61.1 percent from three-point range, connecting on a season-high 11 treys. UNH also out-rebounded SNHU 30-27 and recorded seven blocks.
New Haven returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 23 against Saint Michael's College. Game time at Charger Gymnasium is set for 5:30 p.m.
