BOX SCORE WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) scored a game-high 19 points, but the University of New Haven women’s basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference contest to nationally ranked No. 2 Bentley University, 75-66, Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center.
With the loss, the Chargers drop to 6-11 overall and 5-8 in the NE-10. The No. 2 Falcons stayed perfect on the season at 17-0 overall and 13-0 in conference play.
Moore added eight rebounds to her point total, and went 8-for-16 from the floor in the loss.
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) scored 14 points, on 6-of-12 shooting, while
Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and
Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) each added 11 points. Bradford also led the team with nine rebounds in 35 minutes.
In the first 1:30, New Haven jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Falcons came up short on their first three attempts and turned to ball over early to give UNH the opening lead. With 16:27 left in the first half, Moore connected from downtown to give the Chargers a double figure advantage, 12-2. With 8:25 left in the half, Hebert made another three-pointer and UNH took an even larger lead on the nationally ranked Falcons, 23-10. Two and a half minutes later, Tran drained the fourth three-pointer of the first half to give UNH it’s largest lead of the game, 30-15. Bentley then gained momentum and closed the half with a 20-6 run to cut New Haven’s lead within one, 36-35, at the break.
After UNH made the opening basket of the second half, Bentley went on a 13-2 run to take an eight-point lead, 48-40. The Falcons connected from outside the arc with 13:11 left in the first and improved their lead to double figures, 54-44. Over the next three minutes, the Chargers kept the score under 10, but the double figure advantage would return for the Falcons. Bentley improved its lead to as many as 15 points in the final 10 minutes and took advantage of free throws in the two minutes to seal the victory.
The Chargers were out-rebounded 53-43 and trailed by five in the turnovers. The Falcons capitalized with 24 points off turnovers and 14 second chance points in the win.
New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 29 when it travels to Saint Anselm College. Tip-off in Manchester, N.H. is set for 5:30 p.m.
