Men's Basketball Halted by No. 22 Saint Anselm, 72-52

BOX SCORE MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of New Haven men’s basketball team suffered a streak-ending 72-52 loss to nationally ranked No. 22 Saint Anselm College Tuesday night. With the loss, the Chargers’ 11-game winning streak, the longest since 2001-02, was snapped.

New Haven dropped to 12-6 overall and 9-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The nationally ranked Hawks improved to 15-3 overall and 11-3 in conference play.

Junior guard Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) led the Chargers with 15 points off 6-of-15 shooting. Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) added 13 points and Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) contributed 10. Adkins also led the team with eight rebounds and four assists.

The Chargers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in Manchester, but the Hawks didn’t trail for long. Saint Anselm went on a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to double up New Haven, 14-7 with 13:42 on the clock. In the next three minutes, the Hawks’ lead grew to nine points, while the Chargers’ offense struggled from the floor. New Haven’s struggles continued throughout first half as Saint Anselm opened a 16-point, and eventually an 18-point lead at halftime, 37-19.

In foul trouble early, the Chargers committed nine first-half fouls, including three called on Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech). Exum led the team with six first half point, but the offense shot just 21.4 percent from the floor and 15.4 percent from three-point territory. The Chargers also trailed significantly in points in the paint, 20-4.

With the opening bucket of the second half, Saint Anselm improved its lead to 20 points and the Hawks never looked back. The Chargers cut the lead to as few as 12 points after an Exum jumper at the 13:42 mark, but Saint Anselm was too strong and again led by 20 points just five minutes later. After an 11-2 run, Saint Anselm led by 22 points with 8:01 left. Scoring was few and far between down the stretch as the Hawks sealed a 72-52 victory in the final minute.

Shooting improved for UNH in the second half, connecting on 48.1 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three-point territory. The Hawks were just as productive shooting 50 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from downtown.

As a whole, the Chargers were outrebounded 37-26. The Hawks also led 40-22 in points in the paint.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2 when UMass Lowell travels to Chargers Gymnasium. Game time is set for 1:30 against the River Hawks. A two-game home stand continues next Wednesday, Feb. 6 with another NE-10 matchup with Adelphi.
