Late Surge Pushes Setters Past Women's Basketball, 68-64

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game 68-64 to Pace University at Charger Gymnasium. New Haven, leading 64-59 with just over four minutes remaining, was held scoreless down the stretch and the Setters propelled themselves to the four-point victory. 

The Chargers dropped to 6-5 overall and 5-2 in the NE-10 with the loss. The Setters improved to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play with the win. As a team, UNH shot 39.1 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from three-point territory and 60 percent from the free throw line. Pace held a narrow advantage in all three categories - 40.4 percent from the field, 35 percent from downtown and 75 percent from the charity stripe.

Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) and Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) led New Haven with 12 points each, while Hayes added nine boards. Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) and Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) each added 10 points for UNH.

On the boards, New Haven held a 46-33 advantage, including a 16-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Chargers also led 28-18 in points in the paint and 12-7 in second chance points. The Setters held a 20-17 lead in the points off turnovers and a 4-2 lead in fast break points.

New Haven jumped out to the early lead, taking an 8-2 lead in the first two minutes. The lead them exchanged teams four times before LeBlanc put in a jumper with 6:58 on the clock. The basket was part of an 8-0 swing for UNH, who led 27-20 with 3:55 left in the first half. However, the Setters narrowed the lead to just three at halftime, scoring six of the final eight points of the period.

Pace opened the half with a three pointer, tying the score immediately. The lead again changed numerous times as the teams exchanged numerous baskets in the first 10 minutes. Tran and Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) then connected for a stretch of three-straight three-pointers to give the Chargers a commanding 55-45 lead with 10:39 left. Pace would gradually cut the lead over the next nine minutes and score the game's final seven points to seal the four-point victory.

In the second half, led 10-5 in second-chance points, but trailed 11-3 in points off turnovers.

The game completes the Chargers first games of the season against the NE-10 Southwest Division. UNH will start its NE-10 Northeast Division play against Stonehill on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
