BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven went on a 15-0 run over the span of 6:51 in the second half to pull away from Stonehill College for a 63-50 victory on Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium.
Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) scored a game-high 19 points in the Chargers' sixth consecutive victory.
With the win, New Haven improves to 7-5 on the season and evens its Northeast-10 record at 4-4. Stonehill, the Northeast-10 Champion and a national semifinalist last season, falls to an even 6-6 overall with a 2-6 conference mark.
Williams scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half, shooting 9-of-12 overall for the game.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) added 15 points, while
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) posted his seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The two teams raced out to even the score at 10-10 just under seven minutes into the first half. Anderson then put down a dunk on a fast break three minutes later to break the tied. For the next five minutes, the lead exchanged hands three times and the score was tied twice. Exum sank the first of back-to-back treys at the 4:41 mark, giving New Haven the lead for good. The junior also his a jumper in the paint as time expired to give UNH a three-point lead at the break, 28-25.
In the opening eight minutes of the second half, UNH pushed its lead to as many at nine, but the Skyhawks kept the score within 10 points. Adam Fazzini connected from long range at the 12:05 for Stonehill, cutting the Chargers lead to just six, 42-36. Anderson helped New Haven answer on the next possession with a jumper in the paint to push the lead back to 44-36. New Haven then began running on all cylinders with a 15-0 run over the next nearly seven minutes. Four different players scored during the run and New Haven took a commanding 57-36 lead with 6:04 left in the second half. UNH then cruised to the victory, eventually winning by 13 points, 63-50.
As a team, New Haven held the Skyhawks to 33.3 percent shooting, while connecting on a remarkable 51.9 percent of its shots. The Chargers held a large advantage with points in the paint as well, leading 38-14. New Haven led the rebound margin by seven, 37-30.
The Chargers hit the road for a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games at Merrimack College on Saturday, Jan. 12 and at Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday, Jan. 15. UNH will return home on Saturday, Jan. 19 when it hosts Southern New Hampshire.
