WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Led by 11 kills and six blocks by Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton), the Unviersity of New Haven women's volleyball team swept visiting Post University, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-16) Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium.
New Haven improved to 7-3 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 2-10.
Cannady swung at a .300 clip with 11 kills and five errors on 20 attempts. She also stopped six attempts with three solo blocks and three assists. Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) added seven digs and eight kills with a .211 hitting percentage. Kristin Lee and Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) led the backrow with 11 digs apiece, while Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) and Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) each tallied 13 assists.
As a team, UNH hit .172 with 33 kills on 99 attempts with 16 errors. The Chargers tallied nine service aces, but also struggled behind the line with 12 service errors. UNH also recorded nine total team blocks in the win.
The Eagles played New Haven close through the first third of set one, taking a 7-6 lead after a New Haven attack error. The Eagles error on the ensuing serve sparked a UNH rally as it scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 16-9 lead. New Haven sustained the lead through the first set, despite Post closing the lead within three points five different times. Ane ended the set with a service ace and a 25-20 decision.
Very similar to the first set, UNH and Post played to a 9-9 tie early in set two. An error by the Eagles sparked a 6-0 run for the Chargers which ended with a Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) and Cannady block for a 15-9 UNH lead. The Chargers continued pour on the point as Cannady and Hayley Wilson (Denver, Colo./Overland) recorded another block for a 10-point UNH lead, 22-12. Meteyer recorded the Chargers final point with a kill and a 25-15 UNH lead.
New Haven took an early lead in the third set in part to back-to-back service aces from Ashley Gomez (El Paso, Texas/Ysleta). Her two points and a solo block by Ashley Dalton (Helena, Mont./Capital / Northern Arizona University) put the Chargers ahead 8-3 early. Freshman Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) also recorded back-to-back aces to give New Haven an 18-9 lead later in the set. The Chargers and Eagles exchanged points for the remainder of the final set before Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) hammered away the final kill of the match and a 25-16 score.
New Haven has a short two-day turnaround before hosting Le Moyne on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. The Chargers then travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for a trimatch against Bloomfield and Philadelphia Sciences on Saturday, Oct. 5.
