Chargers Surge Past Stonehill, 3-1

BOX SCORE

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's volleyball team got double-doubles from four student-athletes en route to a 3-1 win over Stonehill in Northeast-10 action at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers took the match by set scores of 25-19, 25-15, 21-25 and 25-23.

With its sixth-straight victory, New Haven improves to 18-4 and remains the only team unbeaten in NE-10 play at 9-0. Stonehill falls to 14-11 on the season with a 6-4 conference tally. Earlier this season, the Chargers also bested the Skyhawks, 3-0, in non-conference action on Sept. 7 as a part of the Charger Invitational.

Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) led all players with 13 kills and completed the double-double with 15 digs. Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) added 11 kills and 11 digs, and Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) was a force at the net, matching her career high with 13 blocks in addition to 10 kills. The fourth double-double came from Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha), who dished out 38 assists to go along with 13 digs.

The Chargers' offense also got seven kills from Ashley Dalton (Helena, Mont./Capital / Northern Arizona University) and five from Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East). Ane added four finishers from the setter spot and Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) recorded one.

Libero Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) led all players with 25 digs, and Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) contributed eight from the back row; both Chargers also distributed five assists apiece. Cannady's 11 blocks paced New Haven to 14 blocks – a season high and the most since last season's regular-season meeting at Stonehill (also four sets).

Kirsten Arvidson led the Skyhawks with 12 kills. Emily Iverson handed out 37 assists for the visitors, and shared the team high of 14 digs with Sydney Maxey.

The Chargers broke a 17-17 deadlock in the set one with an 8-2 run to claim the early advantage with a 25-19 victory. New Haven then led wire-to-wire in the second frame, sparked by a 5-0 run to begin the stanza en route to a 25-15 triumph.

Set three featured 11 ties and three lead changes, the last of which came at 15-15. Stonehill broke the stalemate with three-straight points and held off the Chargers to take a 25-21 decision and extend the match to a fourth set.

The fourth frame also included several ties in the early stages out to a 10-10 deadlock. The Chargers rattled off the next four tallies, but Stonehill stayed within striking distance and eventually knotted the score of the ninth and final time at 21-21. Back-to-back kills from Lee and Meteyer put the Chargers in front for good, and a block by Cannady and Kennelly followed by a Dalton kill sealed the win at 25-23.

The Chargers continue Northeast-10 play and wrap-up their three-match homestand on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with a visit from Adelphi. The match will be broadcast live in high definition and free of charge on NewHavenChargers.com.
