Coming off of its first 20-win season and NCAA postseason appearance since 2004, the New Haven men's basketball team returns eight student-athletes, including four starters, to the court in 2013-14 poised for a return to the national stage. This winter will be the fourth on the sidelines for Head Coach Ted Hotaling.
Â
Backcourt
Back to run the point for Hotaling is senior Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway). Adkins led the Chargers with 3.9 assists per game and a 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio as the Chargers collectively ranked 10th in the nation with a conference-low 11.0 turnovers per contest. He was also New Haven's third-leading scorer at 12.9 points per game while shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 75.2 percent from the free-throw line. Adkins, who rounded out his statline with 3.4 rebounds per outing, was a Third Team All-Northeast-10 selection in 2012-13.
Â
Senior Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) will join Adkins in the starting backcourt after leading the Chargers with 15.8 points per game last season. A Second Team All-NE-10 and NABC All-District honoree, Exum ranked among the nation's leaders, draining 43.2 percent of his attempts from distance in 2012-13 while knocking down 82 triples – the third-highest single-season total in program history. He also shot 83.8 percent from the charity stripe as New Haven's aggregate 74.3 percent mark from the free-throw line slotted at 38th in all of Division II. The 32nd 1,000-point scorer at New Haven, Exum added 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game for the Chargers last winter.
Â
Another returning veteran on the wing is Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin). DePass, who appeared in all 29 games last winter with two starts, averaged 4.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game appearing at both guard and forward. He poured in a career-best 17 points as a sophomore and, last fall, scored a season-high 12 points on three occasions in 2012-13.
Â
Three newcomers will enter the fold in the Chargers' backcourt, led by Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy). Mosley was a two-time All-Suburban New Jersey honoree at Don Bosco Prep, averaging 15 points per game as a senior. Most recently, he netted 14.8 points per contest in a post-graduate year at Putnam Science Academy. Freshmen Lylle Ryals (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Walter Panas), an all-league performer at Walter Panas High School, and New Rochelle High School product Donny Powell (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) will provide additional depth on the perimeter.
Â
Frontcourt
The anchor of the Chargers' frontcourt is junior Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) – the 2012-13 Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Also a Second Team All-NE-10 pick, Anderson ranked third in Division II with 12.0 rebounds per game and slotted ninth in the country with 2.5 blocked shots per contest – leading the NE-10 in both categories. He manned the paint for a New Haven defense that ranked 13th in the nation with a conference-best 61.1 points per game allowed.
Â
One of four Chargers to average double figures with 12.6 points per game, Anderson's 18 double-doubles last winter were just one short of the national leader. Anderson sank nearly half of his shots from the floor (49.2 percent) and stretched opposing defenses by knocking down 34.1 percent of his three-point attempts.
Â
Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) will also return to the frontcourt for his junior year in 2013-14. James averaged 5.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in his first season as a member of Hotaling's starting five. He was the Chargers' most-efficient scorer at 61.3 percent from the field and also converted at a 70.4 percent clip from the line.
Â
A versatile scorer who can stretch defenses from the post and the perimeter, Joshua Guddemi (Nottingham, England/Derby) will see an increased role in 2013-14. He posted 1.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game while coming off the bench in all 29 contests for an average of 13.4 minutes per outing.
Â
The one true center on the New Haven roster is Kevin McLaughlin (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic). The 6-10 Charger big man has seen an increase in playing time throughout his first three seasons, taking the court in 10 contests last winter and netting the first four points of his collegiate career in addition to five rebounds, an assist, a steal and a blocked shot. McLaughlin completed his undergraduate coursework in May of 2013 and has remained at the University as a graduate student pursuing his M.S. in Criminal Justice.
Â
After missing the entirety of last season due to injury, Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) will be back in the mix for Coach Hotaling this year. McDaniels appeared in 17 games as a freshman in 2011-12, averaging 5.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest. Krystian Foriest (Bronx, NY/Wings Academy ) will add additional depth in the frontcourt after appearing in three games of an injury-plagued campaign in 2012-13.
Â
A newcomer expected to make an immediate impact is Queens, N.Y. native Jonny Ocasio (Queens, N.Y./Charlotte (Fla.) / Hillsborough Community College). A junior transfer from Hillsborough Community College in Plant City, Fla., Ocasio averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per game in his last season of action en route to Second Team All-Suncoast Conference honors. The 6-7 swingman can score at the rim and from the perimeter.
Â
Coaching Staff
The theme of continuity runs from the court to the sidelines. Coach Hotaling welcomes Assistant Coach Tobe Carberry back to the bench for his fourth season and Assistant Coach Matt Holt returns for his second campaign. Additionally, Mark Palmieri will join the staff as an assistant coach after a four-year career at New Haven that culminated with a spot as co-captain of the Chargers last season.
Â
Schedule
A difficult schedule is a given in the Northeast-10 Conference, as the Chargers will play six games against teams that joined them at the NCAA Division II East Region Championship last March. In addition to the regularly-scheduled conference outings with region champion Franklin Pierce, reigning NE-10 champion Southern New Hampshire, regular season conference champion Saint Anselm and Assumption, New Haven has added a meeting with CACC frontrunner Bloomfield and an additional non-conference clash with the Penmen. In total, the slate features 12 contests played at Charger Gymnasium, all of which are set to be broadcast live in high definition and free of charge on NewHavenChargers.com.
