BOX SCORE NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's volleyball team swept crosstown and Northeast-10 rival Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday evening to solidify sole ownership of its sixth consecutive NE-10 regular season title.
Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) became the fastest student-athlete in program history to reach 1,000 career digs in the 3-0 road win.
Â
The victory is the 10th in a row for New Haven, which improves to 22-4 overall and 13-0 in the Northeast-10. The Chargers took the contest by set scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-22. The Owls fall to 17-12 with a 5-8 conference mark.
Â
With a match-high 13 digs at SCSU, Olaso reaches the 1,000-dig plateau in the 58th match and 208th set of her career. The 10th Charger to record 1,000 career digs, her 503 digs this fall rank at third all-time in a single season at New Haven. Zuleyka Figueroa owns the single-season program record with 569 digs in 2002, and Heather Ladao set the career mark with 1,574 digs from 2008-11.
Â
Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) was the lone player to tally double-digit kills in the match with 10 finishers on .474 hitting.
Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) and
Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) added eight kills apiece, and the Chargers got five kills each from
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) and
Ashley Dalton (Helena, Mont./Capital / Northern Arizona University).
Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) notched four kills in addition to handing out 25 assists. Collectively, the Chargers hit .287, fueled by a .462 mark in the first set.
Â
Behind the 13 digs registered by Olaso were Meteyer with 11 from the back row and Ane with eight. At the net, Cannady had a hand in five of New Haven's eight team blocks, while Atufunwa and Ane each got a piece of three rejections. The Chargers' defensive effort limited Southern Connecticut State to a .043 team hitting percentage.
Â
Meteyer landed a match-best four aces in addition to two from
Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) and one by Ane as the Chargers recorded seven points out of the serving game.
Â
Faith Ford led the Owls with six kills.
Â
New Haven did not trail in either of the first two sets. The Chargers broke a 3-3 tie in the set one with an eight-point spurt that featured back-to-back kills from Lee and consecutive Meteyer aces en route to a 25-11 win. In the second frame, New Haven led wire-to-wire with a 3-0 run to start the set and two separate 5-0 stretches on the way to a 25-15 triumph.
Â
The Owls fought back from an early 9-3 deficit in set three, eventually claiming a lead at 22-21. However, the home team would not score again as a block by Atufunwa and Dalton followed by two Meteyer kills and a finisher by Cannady closed out the sweep with a 25-22 New Haven win.
Â
The Chargers will conclude the regular season and celebrate Senior Day at Charger Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 15 with a 7 p.m. visit from Southern New Hampshire. All of the action against the Penmen will be broadcast live in high definition and free of charge on NewHavenChargers.com.
