Defensive Battle Goes to Holy Family in Men's Basketball Opener

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season Wednesday night and suffered a 56-43 loss to Holy Family University in Philadelphia. The Tigers improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Chargers dropped their second-straight season opener.

Senior guard Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) led all scorers with 22 points off 5-of-13 from the floor and 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Anderson went 7-of-17 from the floor and garnered five offensive boards.

The Chargers struggled shooting as the Tigers' defense held them to 26 percent from the floor and 11.8 percent from beyond the arc. The Tigers held a 20-0 advantage in points off the bench, while leading 9-3 in second chance points. Points in the paint were all knotted up at 18-18.

Despite falling behind in the early minutes, Adkins connected from long range nearly halfway through the first half and evened the game at 12-12. Over the next 6:35, the Tigers took control of the non-conference battle with an 18-0 run to take a 30-12 lead with 4:17 left in the first half. During the run, UNH turned the ball over three times and missed a combined 11 shots. The Chargers managed to cut the lead to 12 at halftime, thanks to an 8-2 run in the final minutes. Holy Family led 32-20 at the half.

Over the first 10:29 of the second half, the Tigers opened their largest lead of the game and went ahead 46-23 after a Brian Patterson two-pointer. During the remaining minutes, the Chargers gradually chipped away at the Tigers' lead before Anderson concluded scoring with 22 seconds remaining.

New Haven returns to the court in its home opener on Saturday, Nov. 16 against Concordia. Game time at Charger Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
