Chargers' Last Time Out
New Haven opened its season on the short end of a defensive battle at Holy Family on Wednesday, Nov. 13 in Philadelphia.
Jeffery Adkins led all scorers with 22 points, fueled by an 11-for-12 day at the free throw line.
Eric Anderson recorded a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The reigning Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year ranked second in the nation with 18 double-doubles last season and slotted at third in all of Division II with 12.0 rebounds per game.
Ashanti DePass and Cyrus James rounded out the New Haven scoring with two points apiece.
The host Tigers held a 20-0 advantage in points off the bench while also leading in second-chance points, 9-3. Both clubs tallied 18 second-chance points. Holy Family held an edge in the turnover battle, 12-11.
Jemal Mosley and Jonny Ocasio made their first career appearances for the Chargers, while Samir McDaniels took the court for the first time since 2010-11 after missing all of last season due to injury.
New Haven Notes
The Chargers went 12-3 in 15 home games last season. New Haven allowed 60.5 points per game to opponents at Charger Gymnasium with Jeremy Williams (16.5 ppg at home) and Justin Exum (16.1 ppg) leading an offense that netted 70.4 points per contest in front of the fans in West Haven. Since New Haven joined the NCAA in 1972, the program record for home wins is 13, set in 2002-03. Also of note is the 2001-02 squad that went 8-1 in nine home games that winter.
Eric Anderson opened the 2013-14 campaign with a double-double comprised of 17 points and 14 rebounds on Wednesday. He posted 18 double-doubles last winter, just one shy of the NCAA Division II leader in that category. The Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year and a Second Team All-NE-10 pick, Anderson also ranked third in nation in rebounding with 12.0 boards per game.
Just one game into his junior season, Anderson has already climbed into a tie for fifth all-time at New Haven with 125 rejections. His 71 blocks in 2012-13 were the second-most in a single-season in Charger history, tied with "Dollar Bill" Jeffress' 71 stuffs and two shy of Herb Watkins' 73 rejections - both from the 1986-87 campaign.
Jeffery Adkins netted a career-high 22 points to begin his final season with the Blue and Gold. Adkins, who averaged 12.9 points per game last winter, is the next Charger in line to reach 1,000 career points. He currently sits at 835 tallies.
Adkins also ranks 11th all-time in assists at New Haven with 270 and slots at 16th in career steals with 106.
Justin Exum enters his senior year ranked among the all-time Charger greats from beyond the arc. He slots at second all-time in three-pointers made with 232, and his .385 shooting percentage from distance is the sixth-best in program history. Last season, New Haven's leading scorer with 15.8 points per game knocked down the third-most triples in a season with 82 while shooting at a .432 clip from downtown.
Exum has netted 1,226 career points to land at 21st on the New Haven career ledger. He is three points shy of the top 20 and 401 tallies away from the top 10 in program history.
Despite a dry spell from a scoring perspective on Wednesday, New Haven continued two positive trends in its season-opening loss at Holy Family. The Chargers committed just 12 turnovers and surrendered a mere 56 points. UNH ranked 10th in the nation with 11.0 turnovers per game and placed 13th in Division II defensively with 61.1 points allowed per outing last winter.
The Chargers have been selected to win the Northeast-10 Southwest Division in the conference's Preseason Coaches' Poll. New Haven earned 13 of a possible 14 first-place votes (coaches may not vote for themselves), with one first-place tally apiece going to Southern Connecticut State and Adelphi. The Chargers went 8-4 last season against their six divisional foes. The top five teams from each division will qualify for the Northeast-10 Championship.
The 2012-13 Season
New Haven finished last season at 20-9 to record its first 20-win campaign and first NCAA postseason appearance since 2003-04.
The fourth-seeded Chargers upended Dominican, 73-66, in the NCAA East Region Championship Quarterfinals before falling to eventual region champion Franklin Pierce in the semifinal round.
The Chargers earned the third seed in the Northeast-10 Championship with a 16-6 conference record, both program-bests since joining the NE-10 prior to the 2008-09 season.
New Haven was off to a 1-5 start in 2012-13 before winning 19 of its final 23 games. New Haven won six straight games to end the regular season and ran off an 11-game winning streak from Dec. 4 to Jan. 26.
Eric Anderson was selected as the NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Anderson and Justin Exum claimed Second Team All-Northeast-10 honors, while Jeffery Adkins, Jr. earned a spot on the All-NE-10 Third Team.
Exum added a National Association of Basketball Coaches Second Team All-East District honor, the first Charger recognized beyond the conference level since Ismael Caro in 2004.
