PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -Â Senior guard Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) scored 30 points and led the University of New Haven men's basketball team to a 73-62 victory at Pace University Saturday afternoon. It was the third 30-point performance of his career and first since New Year's Eve in 2011 when he dropped 36 points against Molloy College.
The Chargers, who outscored the Setters by 16 in the first half, shot 48.8 percent from the floor in the game (20-of-41) and held a 30-21 advantage on the boards.
New Haven improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the victory. The Setters dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Exum went 7-of-15 from the floor, 6-of-11 from downtown and 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. Teammate Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) recorded his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) added 10 points of 3-of-4 shooting and 4-of-5 from the foul line.
Over the first 11:33 of Saturday's game, the score was tied twice while the lead changes hands five time in the closely contesting opening minutes. Exum would hit a three-pointer at the 8:27 mark and propel UNH to the lead for good. The Chargers went on a 28-7 run for the next 7:10 and took a 45-24 lead. Exum netted back-to-back treys to start the run, while UNH sunk 12-of-14 free throws during the stretch. The Setters netted the final five points of the first half to cut New Haven's lead to 45-29 at the break.
After scoring the first basket of the second half, New Haven saw it's lead narrow over the first 10 minutes of the second stanza. Pace rallied with a 10-2 run and brought the game within seven points, 63-56, at the 4:43 mark. The Setters continued to pressure in the final minutes and came as close as four points, 64-60, after another 4-0 run. New Haven had the final answer with nine of the game's final 11 points. Exum hit a pair of free throws with 17 second left to seal the double-figure win for the Chargers.
New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when it travels to American International College for another Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division clash. Game time against the Yellow Jackets is set for 7:30 p.m.
