Chargers Move to 4-0 with 76-50 Win at Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team stands at 4-0 for the first time since 1989 following a 76-50 victory at Northeast-10 Southwest Division foe Pace on Saturday afternoon. Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) scored a game-high 21 points, and Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) hauled in 16 rebounds.
 
In addition to a 4-0 start, the Chargers move to 3-0 in Northeast-10 action. Pace falls to 0-4 on the season with an 0-2 conference mark.
 
Bradford's 21 points came on a 5-for-6 performance from three-point range and a 6-for-6 outing at the free throw line. Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) added 14 points and Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) had 11 as the Chargers shot 25-for-61 (41 percent) from the floor, 8-for-12 (66.7 percent) from distance and 18-for-22 (81.8 percent) from the free throw line.
 
Hayes added seven points, guiding New Haven to 24 bench points. Ana Obella (Miami, Fla./Cypress Bay) added six off the bench, and Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) scored five. Hayes' 16 boards lead the Chargers to a 42-32 advantage on the glass. The Blue and Gold also won the turnover battle, 16-8, and scored 17 points off of Setters' giveaways.
 
Hayes also handed out a team-leading four assists, and Bradford and Stone each distributed three helpers.
 
Pace was led by a double-double from Yuni Sher with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Setters shot 19-for-55 (34.5 percent) from the field, 3-for-11 (27.3 percent) from three-point range and 9-for-10 (90 percent) at the stripe.
 
A 4-2 lead marked the second and final time that Pace would lead in the contest, as four Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) points sparked an 11-3 run over the ensuing 3:22 that staked the Chargers to a 13-7 advantage. New Haven led by as many as 13 points in the first half and went into the locker room holding a 43-33 advantage.
 
Bradford led all players with 11 points in the first period, fueled by 3-for-4 shooting from downtown, and Stone added nine. All six of Obella's points came over the opening 20 minutes as the Chargers race out to their double-digit lead.
 
The Setters quickly trimmed the lead to eight points, 46-38, two minutes into the second half before the ensuing 14-4 New Haven run put the game away. The margin grew to 21 points at 67-46 with 6:59 to go, and the Chargers coasted to a 76-50 decision.
 
Bradford again heading the scoring effort with 10 second-half points. Hayes hauled in 11 rebounds in the stanza, and the Chargers' defense limited Pace to just 17 points after the break.
 
New Haven's current five-game road swing continues on Tuesday, Nov. 26 with a 5:30 p.m. visit to NE-10 divisional opponent American International. The Chargers will then play two games in Florida and meet Dowling, a 2013 NCAA National Finalist, before returning home to play Adelphi on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 3:30 p.m.
