Second-Half Surge Leads Chargers Past Saint Michael’s, 74-66

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team used 23 second-chance points on 21 offensive rebounds to power past visiting Saint Michael's, 74-66, in non-conference action on Friday evening at Charger Gymnasium. Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
 
With the win, New Haven moves to 7-3 overall, while the Purple Knights fall to 2-8. The teams will meet as a part of the Northeast-10 slate on Jan. 14 in Colchester, Vt.
 
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) led the offense with 16 points as all 10 Chargers to take the court scored. Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly), Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) and Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) each scored eight points, and Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) netted seven off the bench. Six from Jasmine Gibson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Spring Valley), five by Audrey Cunningham (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) and two apiece for Ayana Duncanson (Elmont, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and Ashley Blanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) rounded out the New Haven scoring. As a unit, the Chargers shot 26-for-74 (35.1 percent) from the field, 5-for-20 (25 percent) from three-point range and 17-for-24 (70.8 percent) from the free throw line.
 
The Chargers held a 43-42 edge on the boards and committed eight turnovers compared to 23 giveaways by the Purple Knights. New Haven converted the 23 miscues into 25 points.
 
Indira Evora led all scorers with 18 points for Saint Michael's, including an 11-for-11 performance at the free throw line. Two Purple Knights had double-doubles with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Alexa Long and 12 points with a game-high 14 boards for Maggie Sabine.
 
After a back-and-forth first half that saw New Haven head into the locker room with a 34-31 edge, the Chargers pulled away after the intermission. New Haven hauled in 14 offensive boards in the second half that led to 14 second-chance points, and the Blue and Gold reserves outscored the Purple Knights' bench, 17-4, over the final 20 minutes.
 
All eight of Hebert's points came in the second half as well as four offensive boards for the sophomore. Stone scored six points with eight caroms after the intermission.

The Chargers broke open a 39-36 margin with the next 11 points as a part of a 14-2 run. A Bradford three-pointer capped the stretch and staked New Haven to a 53-38 advantage at the 11:56 mark. The cushion grew as large as 17 points and, despite nine Saint Michael's points in the final 1:35, the Chargers kept the visitors at arm's length to take a 74-66 decision.
 
New Haven returns to the court and resumes Northeast-10 Southwest Division play at crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State on Sunday, Dec. 22. Tip-off from Moore Field House is slated for 1:30 p.m.
