The University of New Haven men's basketball team begins 2014 with a non-conference visit from reigning Northeast-10 Champion Southern New Hampshire. The Chargers and Penmen will meet as a part of the NE-10 slate on Jan. 28 in Manchester, N.H.

New Haven's six-game winning streak came to an end with an 82-74 overtime loss at crosstown and divisional rival Southern Connecticut State on Dec. 22.

Justin Exum scored 10 points, knocking down two three-pointers to establish a New Haven program record for triples in a career. Exum's 253 treys surpass the mark set by Mike Grove, who buried 251 attempts from distance for the Blue and Gold from 1989-93.

Jeffery Adkins led the Chargers' offense with a career-best 27 points. He shot 8-for-12 from the field and drained a career-high four three-pointers on four attempts.

Ashanti DePass added 13 points with three three-pointers as the Chargers went 10-for-26 (38.5 percent) from distance. New Haven was 24-for-65 (36.9 percent) from the floor overall and shot 16-for-28 (57.1 percent) at the free throw line.

The Chargers were outrebounded, 49-42, and each club committed seven turnovers in 45 minutes of action.

Greg Langston carried the Owls to victory, scoring nine points in the second half and nine more in overtime en route to 27 tallies. He added a game-high 15 rebounds.

The last overtime meeting between the crosstown rivals was an 84-71 double-overtime win for Southern Connecticut State at Moore Field House on Feb. 6, 2001. New Haven owns a 42-36 lead in the all-time series against its most frequent opponent.

As of the most recent NCAA report (games played through Dec. 22), New Haven is one of four teams in Division II surrendering fewer than 60 points per game (59.9). The Chargers also rank fifth in the nation with an opponents' field goal percentage of 37.0 percent. The Blue and Gold leads the Northeast-10 in both categories in addition to a conference-low 10.3 turnovers committed per outing. The Chargers rank second in the NE-10 with a +6.8 rebounding margin.

Eric Anderson averages 14.6 points and ranks second in the Northeast-10 with 12.0 rebounds per game. The reigning NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year, who also tops the conference with 2.9 blocked shots per contest, is seventh in the nation on the boards and 12th in rejections.

Anderson has posted seven double-doubles this season while shooting 48.3 percent (56-for-116) from the floor and 70.5 percent (31-for-44) from the free throw line.

Ten games into his junior season, Anderson has climbed into fourth all-time at New Haven with 151 rejections. His 71 blocks in 2012-13 were the second-most in a single-season in Charger history, tied with Bill Jeffress' 71 blocks and two shy of Herb Watkins' 73 rejections - both from the 1986-87 campaign.

With two three-pointers on Dec. 22 at Southern Connecticut State, Justin Exum set a New Haven record with 253 career treys. He surpassed the mark of 251 triples established by Mike Grove from 1989-93. Exum's .386 shooting percentage from distance is the sixth-best in program history.

Exum also ranks 15th all-time in scoring at New Haven with 1,351 career points. The Chargers' leading scorer for the third straight season with 15.6 points per game, he is 276 tallies shy of the program's all-time top 10.

After a career-high 27 points at Southern Connecticut State on Dec. 22, Jeffery Adkins is averaging 15.3 points per game in his final season with the Blue and Gold. At 50.5 percent shooting from the floor this winter, he ranks 23rd overall in the Northeast-10 in field goal percentage and eighth among student-athletes attempting at least 9.5 field goals per game.

Adkins, who posted 12.9 points per contest last winter, currently sits at 966 career tallies. He has also moved into 10th all-time in assists at New Haven with 305 and slots 14th in career steals with 116.

Cyrus James' first career double-double on Dec. 10 against Saint Rose consisted of 11 points and 12 rebounds. James, who also blocked three shots against the Golden Knights, shot 4-for-6 from the field and sank all three of his free throw attempts in the contest. After connecting on both on half of his six field goal attempts at SCSU, he is New Haven's most-efficient scorer this season at 28-for-47 (59.6 percent) from the floor en route to 6.7 points to go along with 8.4 rebounds per game. He hauled in a career-high 13 boards against the Owls.

In his first season as a member of the starting lineup for Head Coach Ted Hotaling, Ashanti DePass is netting 10.0 points per game. The senior has knocked down 19 three-pointers while playing 30.7 minutes per game.

During their six-game winning streak from Nov. 23 to Dec. 19, the Chargers outscored opponents by a +18.2 margin with three wins by more than 20 points. New Haven led by at least 20 points before halftime in five of the six victories with four wire-to-wire wins. Justin Exum averaged a team-best 16.2 points per game in the six outings, and the Chargers outrebounded opponents, 40.2-31.7 (+8.5), during the streak.
