Â
Last Time Out
New Haven used a 22-7 run midway through the second half to pull away from host Southern Connecticut State for an 81-68 win on Sunday, Dec. 22.
Â
The win was the Chargers' second of the season after trailing by double figures (Davis & Elkins, Nov. 29) and the Owls' 55-54 lead up to the 10:14 mark of the second half was the latest that New Haven has trailed in an eventual victory.
Â
Bria Moore scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the second half to lead four Chargers netting double figures.
Â
Aquillin Hayes scored nine points during New Haven's second-half run and finished with 14 tallies in total to go along with five rebounds and three assists.
Â
Briana Bradford and Audrey Cunningham each posted 11 points, steering the UNH reserves to a 29-17 scoring advantage over the SCSU bench.
Â
New Haven was edged on the boards, 42-40, but capitalized with 18 rips from the offensive glass. The Chargers forced a season-best 26 turnovers while committing 15 miscues.
Â
The Blue and Gold improved to 2-1 this season after trailing at halftime and have also won two of three contests when its opponent records a higher field goal percentage.
Â
The Chargers have won three consecutive games over their crosstown and Northeast-10 divisional rival - the first such streak for New Haven over the Owls since a five-game stretch from 1999-2001.
Â
New Haven Notes
At 8-3, New Haven is off to its best 11-game start since an 8-3 opening to its inaugural Northeast-10 campaign in 2008-09. A win over Molloy would mark the best 12-game start to season since the 2006-07 Chargers began at 9-3 en route to winning 12 of their first 15 games and claiming a second consecutive NYCAC/ECC Championship.
Â
The Chargers rank fourth in the Northeast-10 with 61.7 points per game allowed and lead the NE-10 with an opponents' field goal percentage of 36.3 percent. Offensively, New Haven slots third in the conference with a 40.1 percent success rate from three-point range.
Â
Aquillin Hayes has recorded four double-doubles this season after notching a team-best seven double-doubles in 2012-13. Hayes averages 10.8 points and ranks second in the NE-10 with 10.8 rebounds per game.
Â
Including the November overtime contest at No. 17 Rollins, Hayes has two career games with at least 20 rebounds. She hauled in 21 boards to go along with 12 points and eight blocks in a win over Le Moyne last winter.
Â
This season, Briana Bradford has surpassed 20 points in three games en route to a team-high 15.3 points per contest. She scored a career-high 24 points with five three-pointers in the Nov. 13 win over Saint Rose. Bradford also drained five from beyond the arc en route to 21 points in the conference win at Pace on Nov. 23.
Â
Bria Moore has scored in double figures in nine games this winter, including each of the seven last outings. She averages 12.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest and has provided a spark from long range, shooting 17-for-37 (45.9 percent). Moore scored a season-high 20 points against Adelphi on Dec. 7 and most recently notched 17 points in the Dec. 22 win at Southern Connecticut State.
Â
Rykema Stone's double-double against Saint Michael's on Dec. 20 added to a breakout winter for the junior. She currently averages 9.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and a team-leading 1.3 blocked shots per contest.
Â
The Chargers have knocked down eight or more three-pointers in four games this season, including 10 treys in the Nov. 13 win over Saint Rose. For the season, the Blue and Gold have connected on 63-of-157 attempts (40.1 percent) from beyond the arc.
Â
The three teams that have defeated the Chargers this winter (American International, Rollins, Adelphi) are a combined 28-5. Additionally, the Tars and Panthers are both currently in the USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll at No. 16 and No. 18, respectively.
Â
The Chargers' 4-0 start was the first for the program since the 1989-90 team won its first six outings. The Blue and Gold also began at 3-0 in the conference for the first time since 2009-10.
Â
Prior to the season-opening win at Dominican and the Nov. 30 loss at Rollins, New Haven last played an overtime game on Jan. 2, 2011 at crosstown and Northeast-10 rival Southern Connecticut State (L, 60-54). The Chargers last won in an extra session prior to this season on Jan. 26, 2010 at Southern New Hampshire (W, 67-65).
Â
The Nov. 29 win over Davis & Elkins was the first New Haven victory outside of the East Region since a 72-67 win at Lynn in Boca Raton, Fla. on Dec. 20, 2009.
