Women's Basketball Cruises Past Dowling, 74-53

BOX SCORE OAKDALE, N.Y. - Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) recorded her third-straight double-double and led the University of New Haven women's basketball team to a dominating 74-53 victory at Dowling College Wednesday night. Four other Chargers also scored in double figures in the win.

New Haven improved to 6-2 overall, while Dowling dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Hayes scored a team-high 15 points and garnered a game-high 13 rebounds. She went 6-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe. The Harlem, N.Y. native's all-around performance also included four assists, one block and one steal.

Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) and Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) scored 11 points apiece, while Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and Ayana Duncanson (Elmont, N.Y./Francis Lewis) both contributed 10 points. Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) added nine rebounds in the win.

The Chargers went 25-of-56 from the floor (44.6 percent) and 6-of-17 from three-point territory (35.3 percent). UNH also connected on 18-of-20 free throws (90 percent) in the game to lead in all three categories.

The Chargers and Golden Lions exchanged the lead eight times during the first 13:36 of the opening half. Duncanson connected on a pair of free throws with 6:24 left int he first half and the Chargers took a 24-23 lead, a lead they wouldn't lose for the remainder of the game. New Haven went on a 17-5 run to close out the first half and command an 11-point halftime lead, 39-28.

Two minutes into the second half Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) connected from long range and opened a 14-point lead for UNH. New Haven continued to lead by double digits, while Hebert gave the Chargers their first 20-point lead of the game with a layup at the 11:48 mark. In the final five minutes, New Haven gained its' largest lead of the evening with Moore, Hebert and Bradford all combining to push New Haven ahead by as many as 26 points. A pair of Dowling free throws in the closing minute cut New Haven's lead to 21 with 17 seconds left on the clock.

New Haven returns to Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action on Saturday, Dec. 7 when Adelphi travels to Charger Gymnasium. Game time against the Panthers is set for 3:30 p.m.
