BOX SCORE
WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team suffered an 84-81 loss to Adelphi University Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers were led by a 20-points, nine-rebound performance from junior Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career).
New Haven drops to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the loss. The Panthers stay undefeated on the season at 8-0, 4-0 NE-10.
Trailing in the closing seconds, the Chargers missed a desperation three-point field goal which would have evened the score as time expired.
Moore went 5-of-8 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point territory. She also led the team at the line, making 8-of-9 free throw attempts, and with four assists. Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) and Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) each scored in double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Hayes also contributed seven rebounds for UNH, while Bradford tied for the team lead with four helpers.
The Chargers, the first team to score more than 70 points on Adelphi this season, shot 48.3 percent from the floor, 60 percent from long range and 69.6 percent from the charity stripe. Adelphi trailed UNH in all three categories, but the Chargers turned the ball over seven more times than the Panthers, 19-12.
Adelphi was first to gain a sustained lead in the first half, and took a 12-7 lead at the 13:47 mark after a 7-0 run. New Haven chipped away gradually and regained a narrow lead off a Hayes layup with 11:30 on the clock. The lead then changed hands four times over the next three minutes as the teams played to a 27-27 tie. The Chargers next possession sparked a 7-2 run in which UNH finished with a 36-29 lead, a lead they would hold for the remainder of the first half.
The Panthers trailed by four at halftime, but cut it in half with the first basket of the second period. The teams exchanged baskets before Adelphi scored 10 unanswered points and turned a five-poitn deficit into a five-point lead at the 15:31 mark. The Chargers evened the score two other times in the second half, but the Panthers led on down the stretch and sealed their eighth win of the season.
New Haven has nearly two weeks off before returning to the court against Saint Michael's on Friday, Dec. 20. The 6 p.m. tilt with the Purple Knights will take place at Charger Gymnasium.
