Women's Basketball Suffers Loss to Assumption, 78-69

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - For the second time this season, two players scored more than 20 points, but the University of New Haven women's basketball team suffered a 78-69 loss to Assumption College Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. UNH fell to 10-12 overall and 9-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds improved to 16-6 overall and 13-5 in conference play.

Freshman Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) scored 23 points on 8-of-17 and Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) netted 21 off 6-of-15 to lead the Chargers. Assumption's Gabrielle Gibson led all scorers in the game with 32 points, while also grabbing 11 rebounds. Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) led UNH on the glass with 11 points, including four offensive boards.

New Haven took an early lead behind excellent three-point shooting. Bradford connected from long range for the third time at the 12:24 mark and put UNH ahead 17-9. Assumption called a timeout to regroup and went on a 10-2 run over the next seven minutes to tie the game at 19-19 with 5:34 left in the first half. The lead changed hands six more times in the closing minutes and Sabrina Sicilliano put in a layup at the horn to give the Greyhounds a 35-31 advantage at halftime.

The Chargers shot 29.4 percent from the floor in the first half and 31.3 percent from three-point territory. Assumption connected on 33.3 percent of its shots and 28.6 percent from downtown.

Tran opened the second half with a trey to cut the Greyhounds' lead to one very early in the second half. The Chargers trailed by three, 39-36, before Assumption went on a 7-0 run to take a 46-36 lead at the 15:45 mark. UNH cut the lead back to one point four minutes later, but the Greyhounds rallied with just under 10 minutes remaining. Assumption went on another run and took its largest lead of the game with 2:36 left, 68-54. The Chargers narrowed the lead in the final minute back to single digits, while Bradford's layup with 13 seconds left was the final basket.

Assumption out-rebounded UNH 52-47 in the game and committed three-fewer turnovers, 15-12. For the game, the Chargers connected on 34.8 percent of their shots and 28.1 from three-point range. The Greyhounds made 37.3 percent from the floor and 25 percent from downtown.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 16 for its 2012 Play-4-Kay/Pink Zone game against Le Moyne College. Game time at Charger Gymnasium it set for 1:30 p.m.
