BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team defeated the College of Saint Rose 60-59 in double overtime at Charger Gymnasium Tuesday night. With the win and loss by Franklin Pierce, the Chargers earn the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament and will host Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday, March 3 at 3 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
New Haven improved to 19-7 overall and 16-6 in the NE-10 with the win, setting a program record for NE-10 wins. Saint Rose dropped to 13-13 overall and 10-12 in conference play with the loss.
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) led New Haven with 12 points and 18 rebounds in his 17th double-double of the season. Anderson also recording two blocks and three assists. Despite fouling out at the end of regulation,
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) scored a team-best 13 points off 5-of-11 shooting and 3-of-6 from downtown, while adding five assists.
Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) also played big for UNH with 12 points and five rebounds, including three momentum swinging dunks.
Mark Palmieri (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) hit a three-pointer to open play, but scoring quickly slowed down in the first half. The Chargers and Golden Knights exchanged the lead three times in the opening four minutes. The Golden Knights took a two-point lead with a jumper at the 16:15 mark. After leading by as many as five points, 12-7, UNH cut the lead to three with 11:09 on the clock. For the next 4:39 both teams were held scoreless.
Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) broke the silence with a trey to even the score at 12-12. The lead then changed another three times before a Williams layup gave the Chargers a 17-16 lead. UNH went on a 6-4 run to close the half and led 23-20 at the break.
The lead again changed hands numerous times throughout the second half. In total, the lead changed hands 10 times and the score was tied five times in the second stanza. Saint Rose's Dominykas Milka hit 1-of-2 free throws at the 2:00 mark to tie the game at 47-47. With one of his four offensive rebounds, Anderson put the Chargers ahead with a layup 29 seconds later. Kareem Thomas answered for Saint Rose who tied the game at 49-49 with 17 seconds left. On New Haven's next offensive series, Adkins was called for an offensive foul, his fifth personal of the game, with 2.1 on the clock. Saint Rose's desperation attempt from the back court hit the rim and bounced out, forcing overtime.
Neither team scored in the first 2:23 of the first overtime period.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) was the spark for UNH with a jumper in the paint, giving the Chargers a 51-49 lead. Saint Rose took a lead on their next possession with a three-pointer from Dan Mundweiler. In New Haven's following possession, Anderson grabbed another offensive board and was fouled on the put back. He connected on both free throws and gave the Chargers a 53-52 lead with 49 seconds left. The same happened at the other end and Saint Rose regained the lead with 39 seconds left off a pair of Milka free throws. With 18 seconds left, Williams was foul on a jumper and sunk 1-of-2 free throws. At the other end of the court, Saint Rose turned the ball over with 5 seconds left, giving UNH an opportunity for the win. Williams went coast-to-coast with the ball and the last-second desperation runner rimmed out.
In the first 20 seconds of double overtime, James put in a layup. The Golden Knight immediately answered to even the score again. New Haven's next possession was much like the previous; Anderson grabbed an offensive rebound and put back a layup. After missed shots on both ends, Mundweiler put Saint Rose ahead once again at the 2:50 mark with a three pointer. For the next 2:41, the game remained in favor of Saint Rose, 59-58. New Haven's
Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) grabbed the second offensive rebound in a row and was fouled on the put back to go to the line. He hit both free throws and put the Chargers ahead 60-59 with 9.1 seconds left. The Golden Knights took the ball the length of the court before Anderson hammered away his second block of the game to seal the Chargers' victory.
The Chargers out-rebounded Saint Rose 45-37, including a plus-9 advantage on the defensive glass. New Haven turned the ball over 18 times, compared to just eight by the Golden Knights. UNH shot 41.1 percent from the floor, 30.4 percent from three-point territory and 58.3 percent from the line. Saint Rose connected on 35.3 percent of its shots, 25 percent of its three-pointers and 70 percent of its free throws.
