BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The nationally ranked No. 8 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference game 14-9 to No. 10 Dowling College Sunday afternoon at Kayo Field. Junior
Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) led the team with three goals in the loss.
The Chargers drop to 1-1 on the season with the loss, while the Golden Lions improve to 2-0 on the season.
Three other Chargers also scored multiple points in the loss.
Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and
Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) each scored two goals, while
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) scored one and assisted on another. Campbell added four draw controls and two caused turnovers, while
Brittany Ast (Glenwood, N.J./Vernon Township) registered four ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control.
Winning the first six draw controls, Dowling handled the ball for a majority of the first half. It jumped out to a 7-0 lead before freshman
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) netted New Haven's first score with 10:14 left. UNH and Dowling exchanged goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half, bringing the tally to 8-2 in favor of the Golden Lions at halftime.
Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) scored in the first three minutes of the second half to close Dowling's lead to five, 8-3. The Golden Lions then won four of the next five draw controls and scored three unanswered points to take their largest lead of the game, 11-3. The Chargers responded with their own 3-0 run, sparked by a Campbell goal with an assist from
Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) at the 22:46 mark. Fisher scored her second of the game and McKee her first to bring the score back within five, 11-6.
With just under 15 minutes left, Dowling went on a three-goal spree over the course of 10 minutes to all-but seal the victory. The Chargers closed with with three more down the stretch, but the lead was too great and UNH suffered its first setback of the season.
As a team, New Haven trailed 16-9 in draw contraols and 26-22 in shots. The Chargers led 17-11 in ground balls and committed one less turnover, 16-15.
