BOX SCORE BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The nationally ranked No. 11 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference game to No. 1 LIU Post, 23-13, Wednesday afternoon at Hickox Field in New York. Sophomore
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) led the Chargers with five points off four goals and one assist.
The Chargers dropped to 1-2 on the season, while the Pioneers stayed perfect at 4-0.
In the first five minutes, New Haven quickly fell behind to the nation's top-ranked team and the defending national champions. UNH surrendered four early and trailed 4-0 with 25 minutes left in the first half. The Chargers then went on a 6-4 run for the next 23 minutes to cut LIU Post's lead to two with 2:45 left. Campbell and
Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) acounted for four of the six scored, while
Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) also scored during the stretch. As time expired in the first stanza, the Pioneers netted their ninth goal of the game with just one second left on the clock to lead by three at halftime, 9-6.
The Pioneers opened the second half with another scoring run. LIU Post scored five straight and took a 14-6 lead with 23:27 on the clock. New Haven quickly rebounded with six of the next eight goals and cut the lead to just four, 16-12. Campbell and McKee combined for another four during the stretch. The Pioneers then put the game away by netting another seven straight goals over an 11 minutes span.
Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) scored as time expired for UNH and cut the final score within 10 points.
Curry and Ackland both scored two goals, while Lieberman finished with four points off one goal and three assists.
New Haven trailed in shots (39-24), ground balls (14-13) and draw controls (23-14).
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, March 16 against No. 7 Pfeiffer University in a neutral site game at Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
